GOLD TERRITORIES ARE OPEN

ASA officials confirmed to SPY this afternoon that the four Gold territories, like the sectors they replace, are open.  That is, Gold teams from a given territory may enter a Gold qualifier in another territory, subject to the Code.  ASA officials suggest readers look at Article 515 and, where it now reads sectors, read territories.

ASA has not yet updated its Gold page to show dates and locations for territorial and regional tournaments.  SPY will publish that list when available.

Also, note that while there was discussion about moving the pitching rubber for 16A and 18B back to 43 feet, as the Council has now done with 18A, no changes were made for these divisions.

DI PLAYERS NEEDED NOW

The George Washington University is looking for quality D1 softball players that may be interested in transferring at the semester break.  Our current roster of 13 players includes some injuries and we are in strong need of 1 or 2 utility players to add depth to our team.  All players must be sound academic candidates and must have met all qualifier standards prior to enrollment at any two year institution.  We do have limited amounts of scholarship dollars available and are looking for quality students that can play various positions.

Any interested students should immediately contact:

RONALD MCDONALD CORRECTION

A reader writes:

“In a game between the Tulsa Elite Gold and the Texas Express Gold, where the Tulsa Elite lost the game 3-2, it was reported that a pitcher Cayce Coleman (jr.) picks up a relief win with 2 hits in the final four innings. Well, my daughter plays for the Texas Express Gold that won the game. The winning pitcher for the Texas Express was Courtney King(09), and in relief Lauren Kattchee (09). There were no hits off the Express relief pitcher for the last 3 innings(she only pitched for 3 innings). I never saw a roster for the Tulsa Elite, but I assume Cayce Coleman must play for them, as there is no such person on the Express. She may have not been the losing pitcher, and she may have pitched well, but she was not the winning pitcher nor did she get the save. All she did was pitch in a losing effort. The Texas Express Gold won all 5 of their games in this tournament.”  The reader is correct; a review of rosters shows that Coleman pitched for the Tulsa Elite Gold, the source of the original report, which had the correct score but wrong data..

THE DROHAN TWINS – A WARM REMEMBRANCE

Caryl Drohan sent this note after their father passed away;  I liked it so much I asked Caryl for permission to reprint in SPY:

“The last few weeks have been tough but we were able to get a smile on dad's face when we got him to tell stories.

“He loved the NY Giants.  He told a great story about his father, my grandfather and his buddy working at a factory in Yonkers, NY...and his aunt lived across the street.  They could see her clothes line through the factory window and she would put up white and black socks on the line to tell them the score of the giants game.  My grandfather's buddy was John P Quinlan and would become famous flying the Memphis Belle during WW II. This summer we also had a great time watching the bronx is burning.  He told us all about catching the son of Sam and how the fire department from Yonkers was involved....he grew up a few blocks from the apartment building.

And in the last few days he would try to go from his bed to the recliner in the family room.  as it got more difficult he told us that he had to rest at Wake Island... his computer …which was between the two destinations.  He went on to talk about the fighter pilots and how they needed to stop at Wake Island in the Pacific during the war..Dad was a brave man, a great father.  I wish you could have met him.”  love, caryl

THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS

Hi Rayburn,

This is Dave Gustaveson. You probably remember me because of Katie Gustaveson. Katie signed with Biola after having scores of full-rides promised her because of her success in Travel Ball. She has had a great time and is graduating at end of May. She is going on to do missions work with one of the largest Christian Mission organizations in the world, Youth With A Mission. She is graduating with a B.A. in Psychology and going to Perth, Australia in September for her Mission Training. Then she will join the mission full-time after her training. She will continue to work helping kids learn to pitch, serve a hurting world and probably get her B.A. in Social Work after a couple years of experience. Her love for God and people drives her. Thanks for all you do for softball ladies and for helping Katie's experience to be amazing. Even though she gave up a bit by not going NCAA, she has been so fulfilled with the incredible experience Biola University offered.

 GOLFERS IN HEAVEN

God asks Arnie first: "What do you believe?" Arnie thinks long and hard,

looks God in the eye, and says, "I believe in hard work, and in staying

true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I was lucky, but I

always tried to do right by my fans." God can't help but see the essential

goodness of Palmer, and offers him a seat to his left.

Then God turns to Nicklaus and says, "What do you believe?" Jack says

"I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals

Of life.

I, too, have been lucky, but win or lose, I've always tried to be a true

sportsman, both on and off the playing fields.'"

God is greatly moved by Jack's high-pitched eloquence, and he offers him

a seat to his right.

Finally, God turns to Woods: "And you, Tiger, what do you believe?"

Tiger replies, "I believe you're in my seat."
