WHAT THE COUNCIL DID – AND DID NOT DO

As SPY readers know, the ASA Council at its annual meeting last week reorganized Gold into the existing territorial format, which necessitated moving some regions from their former sector alignments.  Article 515 remains virtually intact; simply substitute the word “territory” for “sector.”  Thus teams may enter other sector tournaments.

ASA made the necessary change in pitching distance for 18A – to 43 feet – but retained the 40ft distance for 16A and 18B.

Sometimes, what the Council didn’t approve is as significant as the changes.  Rejected were proposals to use metal cleats; to allow teams to enter other regional tournaments; to re-establish the four returning berths in Gold (but keeping two returning berths in 18A.  Also rejected were two proposals (which SPY agrees would have been unworkable) to require all the territorial tournaments to be held the first three weeks in July, and to require all Gold regional tournaments to be held the last two weeks in June.  The Council also rejected a proposal which would have banned first-year college players from JO competition.

SPY will publish territorial and regional tournament dates and sites when available.
