A QUESTION FOR ASA ABOUT ERNIE PARKER
A READER ASKS: Speaking of the
Hall of Fame, has anyone considered Ernie Parker for nomination to same? He has
done more for softball in the Pitching
arena, single handedly, than any one person. Teaching his style, which is the
best by the way, around the country and the world. One might suggest that he is
indirectly responsible for the 43 foot rule, two feet on the rubber, the juiced
up bats, and the juiced up ball. All due to the stronger and stronger pitching
over the years. He has been the man when it comes to turning out dominant
pitching for 20 + years beginning with Lisa Fernandez and De De Weiman in the
middle to late 80's. Why do we have to wait till they're gone to award these
honors? (SPY agrees and will pose the question to ASA which also overlooks
Ernie in selecting pitching coaches.)
THERE IS NO GREATER FORCE…
In politics than an idea whose time has come.
The American public made abundantly clear that it is dissatisfied with the conduct of the war in Iraq – but didn’t rally behind any specific solution. President Bush is apparently willing to rethink his Administration’s strategy, with hoped-for guidance from the Baker-Hamilton study group. The Democrats campaigned against the war but notably did not have a coherent policy; indeed, various Democrat lions advocate very different policies.
But, there is a scramble to be first among equals in leading the new Congress to a solution.
Sen. Joe Biden will chair Foreign Relations where any solution must meet approval. Sen. Carl Levin will head Armed Services and wants early agreement on a phased withdrawal. Senate democratic leader Reid also wants early withdrawal. Sen. John McClain, a hardliner, needs to help forge a new policy for the 2008 campaign. Sen. John Kerry wants a leading role to salvage his reputation, and perhaps his career. Sen. Joe Lieberman won as an independent despite supporting Bush on the war. James Webb hasn’t taken office, but has declared he will be on Foreign Relations and expects to be the focal point of a new policy consensus, heady doings for a freshman who has already announced he will be a maverick.
The House will have a big voice but it’s not clear whose voice. Rep John Murtha, perhaps the most outspoken for of the war, is competing for Majority Leader, with the blessing of Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi who will have her hands full holding her disparate gang of old-line liberals, Blue Dog democrats, and newly elected moderates – the majority of all three groups reportedly backing Rep. Steny Hoyer for Leader when the democrats caucus on Thursday. Pelosi could lose the first test of her leadership. Rep Ike Skelton, who will head House Armed Services, will have a say, as he resurrects a subcommittee on oversight and investigation.
Not an easy choice for Democrats or Republicans who also have a leadership contest. Back the wrong guys and you could forfeit committee assignments and office space. The latter is supposedly selected by lottery, but the Democrats go first.
