NPF NEWS
ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Rockford Thunder has re-signed last season’s left fielder Amanda Williams, team General Manager Aaron M. Moore announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released. Williams, 23, was originally the 16th overall pick in the 2006 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Draft out of Marshall (W. Va.) University by the Chicago Bandits. After hitting .256 as a rookie in ’06, Williams’ average dropped to .194 during the 2007 season. She started all 42 games in which she played, while recording 21 hits in 108 at-bats, including four extra base hits. She also tied for third on the team with five stolen bases. Defensively, Williams was very strong for the Thunder. She tied Kristen Zaleski for the team league with five outfield assists.
THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME
Very touching letter from the father of a player who has now had surgery to correct this problem – after missing much of her senior year, and undergoing many different tests and diagnoses before a vascular surgeon detected the underlying problem affecting her arm and hands.

has an extra set of small ribs(I call them spurs)in the neck area. They call
this problem Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). The nerves and/or blood vessels get
squeezed off while raising the arm. I did some searches on the internet and
found many articles on this subject. Megan is scheduled for surgery tomorrow
morning to remove the ‘spur’ rib and also the first rib in her right shoulder.
We can only pray that she has a full recovery and can continue to pursue her
dream of playing college softball. One MAJOR problem: Megan is a senior ’08 so
she has missed all of the showcase period and missed out on many opportunities.
If anyone has suggestions, I am all ears. I’d appreciate any feedback. As I said
in the beginning I hope someone can learn from this and avoid the pain. I am not
sure any training, posture correcting, etc would have helped in Megan’s case.
But the shoulder can get ‘out of place’, which hers is, if you do not train the
muscles in the back to counter the continuous throwing motion to the front. Here
is the story that is unbelievably almost exactly what we went thru just not as
long...only took us one year.”
