SAY IT AIN’T SO, Mission Viejo
Hearing from Southern California folks that the City of Mission Viejo is considering converting the softball fields at Alicia Park into a dog park. Please convey your thoughts to the city fathers. We’ve all known scores of girls who began playing at Alicia when they were mighty mites, and it continues to be a viable venue for travel ball. Several stars of the college game stepped up their games on those fields. First California tournament I ever attended was at Alicia; my daughter Allison was playing that weekend for the 12U Firecrackers. We were staying with coach Bill Smith when he got a call from Larry Mays, offering to let Stephanie Smith and Allison play some innings with Gordon’s Panthers. Bill’s older daughter Jackie was Larry’s catcher. Surprise! The youngsters said no; they were going to Planet Hollywood with oldest Smith daughter Janet. So, guess who went to watch Gordon’s Panthers at Alicia.
SOFTBALL DIPLOMACY
International softball is more than just balls and strikes, wins and losses. Jennie Finch stayed an extra day in Japan, after Team USA won the Japan Cup. In addition to filming a show for the Japanese, Jennie and Japanese ace Ueno joined together to pitch to some Japanese celebrities. Jennie wrote, “It was fun communicating with them off the field, and learning about them and the way they live. Good stuff. Enjoyed the experience.”
