AN ARAFAT SECRET
Once a deeply buried secret, now the story has come out, albeit buried deep within the obituaries. Yes, the Israelis once had Arafat in the scope of a sniper’s rifle – and could have taken him out. But, the United States persuaded the Israelis not to take the shot. Incredible as it may seem, the assassination could well have incited even more bloodshed in the Middle East – and there was well-founded concern that the men who would succeed him in the late ‘80s would be even more hardline, if that is possible. There was also concern about Saudi reaction – a factor then and now in every Middle East equation – and not just because of oil. As the Turk Sollazo said in The Godfather, blood is expensive. Sometimes, a “wet” solution to a problem cannot be avoided, but an XPD (expedited dispatch) invariably carries many risks, all of which must be calculated.

AFGHAN WOMEN
Barbara Walters of 20/20 did a story on gender roles in
Kabul several years
before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked about 5
paces behind their husbands.
She returned to Kabul recently and observed that women still walk behind their
husbands, but now seem to walk even further back and are happy with the old
custom. Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, "Why do you
now seem happy with the old custom that you used to try and change?"
"Land mines." said the woman.
