POTPOURRI

Candied Sweet Potatoes.  Too impatient to bake an Idaho , I found a box in the freezer: candied sweet potatoes.  I couldn’t decide whether this was a box I should have thrown out after the big blackout, but, once having prided myself on culinary skills, I popped these suckers into the microwave, made the glaze – and pulled out a bowl of caramel colored rocks.  I used to host dinner parties, and would make rack of lamb, or chicken Provencal, all that good stuff.  Ruefully, I thought of the shelves full of canned sweet potatoes I could have bought.  You can only eat so many bologna sandwiches.

The Watusi Ritual.  Catholic boys don’t really have a rite of passage into manhood; when they start reeling with the feeling, their fathers, priests and nuns tell them that what they’re thinking is sinful.  Jewish boys have their bar mitzvahs.  Tonight, I watched the Discovery Channel (I needed something to lift me out of that Redskin downer).  The whole village gets stoned on wine laced with honey. They spend hours decorating their bodies.  The young women dance themselves into a frenzy, and bare their breasts, and are beaten with sticks – and beg for more.  (I wonder what would have happened if, on my 16th birthday, I went over to my sister’s sorority house at Oklahoma and asked all the girls to bare their breasts?  My sister and her fiancé (now her husband) took me to this club in Oklahoma City , called the Jamboree, and I got to watch Lilly the Cat Girl Christine do her thing.  She had a sculpted body two decades before women resorted to plastic surgery.)  Back to the Watusi.  The big deal is that at a late hour, the young man appears, buck naked, so that the young women, now much aware that he can marry if he passes the test, get to check him out.  The test is straight out of Evil Knievel.  The young man has to leap over some tethered bullocks; when you’re in your birthday suit, clearing those horns has your total concentration.  He passed.  You should have seen the grins on some of those babes.  (I know: you thought I was going to mention boobs)

There are Days when all the early signs are warnings that you should go back to bed.  Yesterday was one of those days. Went to CVS to pick up my non-digital photos from China – mostly the awards ceremony;  a cloud passed over when the woman handed me a roll of film with an empty packet; sorry, but, somehow, your photos were destroyed in the processing.  Their liability is limited to replacing the film.  Very diplomatically, I informed this woman that the photos were priceless and irreplaceable.  I picked the Powerball number – but no other numbers, for a total win of $3.  My daughter decided she wanted two ceremonies – one in Virginia, the other in Capetown , South Africa , where David’s family still has beaucoup relations.  My cell phone died, necessitating three hours at the AT&T store where no one phone offered all the services of the original phone, for which they no longer make batteries.  I walked outside, and encountered my ex-wife; we were joined a few minutes later by a full bull colonel she apparently used to date.  Had on a Beirut shirt; kept looking at me, thought I looked like Rayburn Hesse.  I said no, and also said no when he asked if I were her new husband.  I truly enjoyed watching her squirm.  Partial payback for my agreeing to store even more of the stuff she no longer wants to keep for our daughters; seems she is having all new carpeting laid down. Got a certified letter from Hertz saying they paid all the bills in Mexico which I refused to pay and now they are suing me.   Spent the rest of the day trying unsuccessfully to master Dreamweaver; went to bed after midnight with a roaring headache.
