SOUTH DAKOTA STATE NEEDS YOU

Rayburn,

My name is Joanna Lane and I met you once while I was working as a graduate assistant at Florida State in 2003.  I am the new head coach at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD (just north of Sioux Falls).  We are a new addition to the Summit (formerly MidCon) league and I inherited a roster of 13 players.  With some injury issues looming I am looking for DI talent kids that may be interested in transferring at the semester break.  We do have some money available and are looking for athletes with the ability to play more than one position.  If you could help me get the word out I would appreciate it.  Thanks!

THANKSGIVING DINNER ETIQUETTE

Which is the worst to do at the table?
Lick your fingers
Rub your full belly
Blow your nose
Wave your fork around
Cut up all your food
Take too large bites
Rock back in your chair
A napkin bib
Pick your teeth
Clean out your fingernails
Talk with your mouth full
In the AOL poll, 38% said blowing your nose.  While I am inveterately guilty of two of these eleven, I would add a 12th: don’t scratch yourself with your salad fork.  And a 13th: if your hostess (wife, mother-in-law, whatever) has made a special sauce for the main course, ala tournedos halder, do not cover the meat with catsup (ketchup).  I was in a Parisienne restaurant which had just won a coveted third star in the Guide Michelin, and a crowd gathered to celebrate.  An American at the next table asked for catsup, and proceeded to drown veal francaise. The owner-chef, curious to see who had ordered catsup, raced over to the table, grabbed the dish and ordered the man out of his café.

Another don’t.  Went to dinner Saturday night with the Durhams and Wymers at a very well known seafood restaurant.  Up front, one of the worst bands I have ever heard.  I asked the manager how much she was paying, and said I would pay the band an equal amount to go home.  She was not amused.  But, they did give us a table at the far opposite side of this very large restaurant.  Excellent food.  Had dinner the night before with Impact’s Connie May and assorted friends at a Tex-Mex joint; also good.

IF THE STORY HASN’T BEEN ON TV

Odds are good that your darling daughters are not aware of current news, much less historical events.  The Florida Seminoles softball team is sponsored by the Seminole tribe; I asked a group of the players to name the famous chief of the tribe.  Blank looks.  One girl suggested Pocahantas.  Finally, after a few seconds, a girl piped up, Osceola.  Of course, that is not as grievous as two years ago when I asked members of the Oklahoma varsity the meaning of Boomer Sooner.

I asked another group if they were aware of two endangered species which had been on the news this week.  Nada.  The Bactrian camel elicited no interest so I didn’t ask which of two camel species were indigenous to the Sahara and the other to the Gobi.  But, when I said Sherwood Forest was dying out, several girls knew that was Robin Hood’s venue.
