OKLAHOMA PERFECT IN FALL BALL
NORMAN,
Okla.
– The Oklahoma softball team remained perfect in fall play with a 13-2 win over
St. Gregory’s Tuesday night at the OU Softball Complex. The two squads played a
12-inning contest with a break in between the sixth and the seventh frame.
Sophomore catcher Lindsey Vandever highlighted the Oklahoma offense as she went
2-for-4 with four RBI, including a home run. Junior Samantha Ricketts, a 2006
finalist for National Player of the Year, showed her power as she went 4-for-6
with an RBI, which was a home run. Wendy Trott recorded OU’s third solo homer
of the game as she finished 2-for-3.
Junior pitcher D.J. Mathis led the defense as she threw the first six innings
and held St. Gregory’s hitless while striking out 11. Morgan Hudsonpillar and
Jadyn Smith split the final six innings. Hudsonpillar threw 3.1 innings and
surrendered five hits and two runs while striking out four. Smith was solid in
her 2.2 innings of action as she struck out three and didn’t allow a hit or a
walk.
Canadian Softball Team blanks Chinese Taipei
(Beijing China) – After the Canadian Senior Women’s Softball Team was shut down by the Australian pitchers yesterday in a 2-0 loss, the red and white bounced back today with a 6-0 win over Chinese Taipei. Lauren Bay Regula (Trail, BC) and Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) combined for the one-hit shutout win, while Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON), Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) and Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) drove in all the runs Canada would need.
The game was highlighted by the return of Lauren Bay Regula to the pitching, who was sidelined most of the summer with an injury. Bay Regula pitched three scoreless innings while only giving up one hit and striking out three batters. Robin Mackin came in to pitch the remaining four innings and retired all twelve batters she faced, striking out six.
At the plate, Canada opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Melanie Matthews hit a sacrifice fly to score Erin McLean from third. They would add two more runs in the fourth inning following two run-scoring doubles by Megan Timpf and Melanie Matthews, increasing the lead to 3-0. Canada then added single runs in each of the final three innings on an RBI double by McLean in the 5th, a solo homerun by Timpf in the 6th, and an RBI single, also off the bat of Timpf, in the 7th.
Erin McLean collected four hits and two runs batted in and Megan Timpf registered three hits while driving in three for Canada. Melanie Matthews, Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC), Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON), Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC) and Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) also registered hits for Canada.
Canada (2-1) will play Chinese Taipei (0-3) again early tomorrow morning (midnight EDT) before taking on Australia (2-0 at press time) later that night (9:30pm EDT).

DINNER ON THE DIAMOND
Softball and
Baseball Teams To Host “Dinner On The Diamond”
Get Your First Look At This Year’s Teams
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball and baseball teams
will host their first annual "Dinner on the Diamond" on Wednesday, October 17 at
the Mount Vernon Softball Complex at 4:30 pm.
During this occasion, GW students and residents of the local community will get
a chance to meet the GW Softball and Baseball teams, participate in fun games, a
silent auction, as well as enjoy a BBQ dinner. Music will also be provided.
Admission for the event is $10 for GW students and $15 for Non GW students.
Children under the age of 12 will be admitted for just $7. The cost of
admission covers dinner, games, and the chance to win free prizes.
GW Softball (23-27, 9-11 A-10) is coming off the best season in its five-year
history of the program. The Colonials appeared in their first-ever Atlantic 10
Tournament in 2007 as the No. 6 seed. GW held leads in both opening round games
versus No. 3 seed, Saint Louis, and No. 5 seed, Charlotte, but were defeated in
both contests.
GW Baseball was 23-31-1 overall in 2007 and 14-13 in the A-10, finishing just
one spot out of the conference tournament, despite ending the year with a
season-best six-game winning streak. It was their 14th straight season with at
least 20 wins.
To purchase tickets in advance or for more information, call the GW Softball
office at (202) 994-4637, or email Asst. Softball Coach Lisa Iancin at

BRING BACK THE GUILLOTINE
Intruders entered the Orsay Museum early
Sunday and punched a hole in a renowned work by Impressionist painter Claude
Monet, the French culture minister said. She described the damage as an attack
on "our memory, our patrimony."
A surveillance camera caught a group entering the museum, which houses a major
collection of Impressionist art on the Left Bank of the French capital along the
Seine River.
An alarm sounded and the group left, but not before damaging an invaluable
painting, "Le Pont d'Argenteuil," an aide to Culture Minister Christine Albanel
said by telephone.
Elsewhere, an idiot plastered red lipstick on an all white painting.
POTPOURRI
Candidate for the funny farm. The guy who stuck his pet rattlesnake in his mouth and was seriously bitten was obviously prepared; his wife was standing by with snake bite venom, etc. Lots of people live out on the edge like those skydivers who died in the Cascades; Grand Prix and Nascar drivers, etc., but locking lips with a rattler! Ever see Mondo Cane where young Indian girls proved their virtue by kissing a cobra?
Pot Pies. I come from a long line of consumers of pot pies. Sorry for the folks at Banquet whose pot pies may be the link to salmonella, but they were never on the pot pie hit parade. Once you’ve tried Pepperidge Farm, you’re ready to step up to the crème de la crème – Marie Callender.
Tournament directors take note. The softball world need not survive on hot dogs and hamburgers. The TNJ Tournament draws raves from attending teams and college coaches because Jim Barsalona asks local teams to provide food – in addition to the daily stuff he has catered. For example, this weekend, Mike Fegely of the Blazing Angels will offer his to-die-for-brisket.
The Yankees. As Jorge Posada said, Joe Torre doesn’t bat, throw, or field. Johnny Damon and others have been effusive in their praise for Torre who is literally the face of the Yankees. Yes, the Bronx Bombers have not won the World Series since 2000 – which can be said of all but six other teams. None of this may matter to Steinbrenner. If he does nothing else, I hope the Boss sends A-Rod on his way. If Steinbrenner makes October his yardstick, Rodriguez is vastly overpaid. He and Jeter and Matsui and Posada stranded a lot of runners. Clemens was done before he got to the Bronx. That Korean kid may have won 19 games but that first pitch in Game 4 was a “tell” and Ron Guidry knew the sinkerball wasn’t staying down and they were in trouble. The hardest decision in baseball or softball is when to pull a pitcher. Some critics say Mussina should have started but he was also a question mark; his best stuff is behind him. Next year!!
