TARNISH ON MY CRYSTAL BALL
The Yankees are better off with Joe Torre staying at the helm, my prediction notwithstanding. Is the Boss mellowing? Those who observed Steinbrenner during the Billy Martin-Yogi Berra firings were sure Joe would go. Glad we were wrong. Wonder if there were any strings attached. Of course, the people in deep doo-doo are those sports writers and broadcasters who predicted a Yankee sweep. Invincible? Tell that to some hungry Tigers.
WINGS AND THE WOMAN
This film came out in 1942 under another title, with Anne Neagle playing the pioneering British aviatrix who was the English rival of Amelia Earhart – and set several records. Her feats gave women a non-combat role in the RAF. Tragically, Johnson died like Everhart; her RAF plane lost power over the Thames Estuary; Johnson bailed out but drowned. Her body was never found. Enjoyed the flick.
