OCTOBER 16 UPDATE

NAIA POWER ENDS PROGRAM

The Huntsville , AL Times carried a story that Athens State University in Athens , AL is dropping its womens softball program at the end of the 2003-04 school year.  The program has been in existence since 1992.  Since then, they have achieved a #1 national ranking and have played in 9 NAIA world series tournaments.  They finished 2nd twice, 4th twice and fifth once.

This is the second softball program to close in this general area in 2 years.  Last year, D2 Mississippi University for Women in
Columbus , MS shut down its softball program.  Both of these programs provided numerous opportunities to play college softball to women from the Southeast.

RECRUITING NOTE

Players, and coaches too.  Before you tell Suzy Q and Betty Jo and other teammates and friends about your college decision, tell the other college coaches who are recruiting you – especially when you have visited their campus or they have visited your home.  While I take pride in SPY publishing these commitments as close to the event as possible, no college coach who thinks he/she is in the hunt should find out differently from a third party.  But, it happens.  More than pride, these coaches have invested time and money in recruiting you, and, reserved a spot for you in their recruiting class.  You’ve made a grown-up decision; now follow through with grown-up style etiquette.
