OCTOBER 22 UPDATE
Commitments
Feldman, Miranda. SS, Oklahoma Rebels Gold, to Wichita State.
Krueger, Amy. Houston Power Gold, to Southwest Texas State.
Hitting
We continue to be astounded by the number of batters at the Gold level who still take the first pitch, just as they did in the pigtail leagues. Giving good pitchers an edge, especially the smart ones, is not a winning strategy.
Humor
If you don’t get this the first time, well, think about it.

Movie Trivia
I once learned I had 98 cousins to varying degrees but only acknowledge 3. It seems Doc Holliday had a bunch also, and they were all writers. Now, reader D Glover says he thinks notorious gunslinger John Wesley Hardin was not only related but also penned an autobiography.
A reader asks whether Maureen O’Hara or Martha Hyer appeared in the most movies with John Wayne. My answer: O’Hara. Hyer was in Sons of Katie Elder but O’Hara was in one of the John Ford Trilogy Rio Grande, as well as McClintock and Big Jake, and not least that Irish epic, The Quiet Man. She really was Mary Kate Daniher. One of the few movie scores where you can hear the entire Rushes of Mallow. My grandmother’s family came from County Kerry; Ireland is a place to visit just for the love of it.
While Tommy Wright thinks most SPY readers are not old enough to appreciate these movie trivia bits, we get a lot of mail about it. Don Minard says any list of movies for men who like movies has to include The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance which had John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin.
And, from Dennis Frady: As long as we are talking about "Gone With The
Wind", here is another trivia question. Selznik asked his assistants to
pick a place where the film could be shown as a test with any publicity. They
picked a theater in a little City. After
the people watched the movie they had come to see, they were told that they
would
be treated, free of charge, to a preview of a major motion picture. They were
also told that if they chose to stay to see the preview, they could not leave
until
the movie was over They were not told what movie it was. When the title panned
across the screen, the people watching burst into applause, because most people
knew it was in production. Of course, they gave the movie a very high rating.
The questions are: (1) In what City did this preview take place? and (2) What
"part" of the movie was not included at this preview.
Hints: The City was NOT Atlanta, where it premiered and notice that
"part" is in
quotes.
Tomorrow: the answer to the Barney Rubbel quiz.
