Amie Stewart’s New Job

Amie has reportedly agreed to be the pitching coach at UC Riverside, which is in its second year as a D-1 program, competing with CS Fullerton, UOP, Long Beach State, etc. SPY is told that Amie will continue to coach Amie Stewart’s Rebels Gold. Amie was an All American pitcher at UNLV, and played in the WPSL.

The Winner and Still Champions

Recall that a good share of the credit for California’s WCWS championship goes to those freshmen coming off Hal Bobrow’s West Bay Nuggets? The girls from Echoes Gold may not all play at Nebraska, but, bonding together in HS, four members of Nebraska's Echoes Gold team led their high school softball team to first in Nebraska's Class A State Championship this week. Shortstop Lindsey Larry, 3rd Baseman Tami Phillips, Centerfielder Sara Sortino and Catcher Ashley Killeen led the Papillion LaVista High School team to the championship with a record of 34-3. Mike Govig, coach of Echoes Gold, is also the high school softball coach at Papillion. Papillion LaVista has won
eight consecutive state championships. Another Echo, Jessica "Pook" German, played on the Cozad HS Haymakers, which won the Class C championship. Congratulations, Mike, and to your players.

Lancaster Corrections

Liz Hall, the new pitcher for the Beach Girls, who threw that one-hitter in their 3-0 win over OCAs, is a senior, not a junior. I read the 11 in Joe’s guide as her class.

There are two Krismans on Sorcerer, twins Kacy and Kim. In the game reviewed, Kim was playing left field and Kacy was at third. Kim has the 1230 and Kacy has a 1240 SAT. Both were 2 for 3 in the game.

Phoenix Storm is the second team to dispute a report given to SPY by San Diego Thunder, who reported the game as ending in a 2-2 tie. Px Storm says the score was Storm 4, Thunder 2. Like the game between Thunder and Blast, the difference hinges on do you count runs scored in partial innings when games are called because time has expired in the middle of an inning. SPY’s view is that, since these games are not being played under ASA championship rules, the game does not revert to the last completed inning, but is complete up to the point at which the umpire stops it. Thus, SPY reported the Thunder and Blast played to a 6-6 tie, not a 6-2 Thunder victory. Storm also contends only one of the two runs was unearned, but, their major point is the Storm scored two more runs in the last inning, off Jennifer Zev, on two singles and a double, for a 4-2 win.

Ergo, all teams, when SPY asks you for a review of a game which I did not get to see, give me the complete game, up to the moment the umpires stopped it.

Phoenix Storm won 4 out of the 5 games. The only loss was to Sting. The Storm scored 17 runs in 2 games against LV Blast and Cal Breeze on Sunday at Desert Sand Park.

We have scores on the Lady Sharks, who defeated Bike 3-2, and Valley Breeze 4-3, while tying the AZ Mustangs and Fresno Force Gold by identical scores of 1-1.

Finally, we have these game summaries from the WA Lake Breeze. SPY did not see these games but we appreciate the information.

Saturday Game # 1... Lake Breeze 1 vs Tucson Bandits 0
Gina Carbonatto's 03 (University of Pacific, CA) solo homerun was the only
run. Great defense and pitching by both teams.

Saturday Game #2... Lake Breeze 1 vs California Rage 0
Tracie Adix 03 (DePaul University) and Meagan Gordon 04 combined to pitch a
"PERFECT" game.

Saturday Game #3...Lake Breeze 3 vs WA Ladyhawks 18U "A" 0
Tracie Adix and Meagan Gordon combine to throw a 1 hitter.

Sunday Game #4...Lake Breeze 6 vs Ogden Terminators 0
Tracie and Meagan combine again for their 3rd consecutive shutout.
Offensively Breeze was lead by Kristi Leiter 03 (University of Oregon) and
Tawnya Guthrie 03 (Wichita State University).

Sunday Game #5...Lake Breeze 6 vs So Cal Stealth (Henning) 1
Tracie Adix and Meagan Gordon finally gave up a run!

Summary.... Lake Breeze 5-0, one perfect game, 1 one hitter, 1 two hitter,
and 1 run allowed in all 5 games.

The Sniper

Returning from California, I was profoundly saddened by the realization that this sniper(s) had brought so much of what we call normal life to a halt. It’s not just that no fall ball is being played on our softball and soccer fields; or that some schools are closed. It’s the fear – palpable fear of the unknown.

Movie Trivia

Several readers named Abbott and Costello as the non-baseball related members of the Hall of Fame (in answer to a SPY quiz). However, reader D. Glover, who checked the Hall of Fame FAQ’s, reports that Abbott and Costello are NOT members of the Hall of Fame, but the Museum features their famous "who’s on first" routine.
