From readers
I had dinner Tuesday night with John Gagne, Kathy Riley et al at a hilltop restaurant in La Paz, in the Laguna Hills. When we sat, we could see a low level of fire atop a hill to the southeast; by the time dinner arrived the hilltop was engulfed in flames. Wednesday morning, my car was sprinkled with ash – at a hotel in Santa Ana! Today, there are signs the wind is dying and firefighters are expanding the areas under their control.
As a reader suggested, Pray for all the people that have lost their homes. Pray these fires die down soon. Pray for the firefighters and their safety.

AN OPINION IN WHICH SPY CONCURS
Rarely do I comment on articles I read but had to add factual commentation to the latest complaints. We played at Huntington Beach and Buckingham Fields for one team and Chino Hills Field of Dreams and Mark Twain with the other team. Comments about Gary’s teams playing ONLY on the main fields is so far from the truth. I have always witnessed his teams at other locations. When we played at locations other than Huntington Beach, we still had our fair share of colleges attend our games. I firmly believe it is the player’s responsibility to write to these college coaches and get them to view their games. It is the player’s interest in a college that will spark the interest from the coaches…not the other way around! There is currently a shortage of umpires and we are witnessing a drastic decline in quality umpires but is that the tournament directors fault? We have been attending Gary’s tournaments over the past five years at the Gold level and had to pay our time with getting on the main fields which is expected. Accommodating more teams will result in unhappy parents, players, and coaches. If there were fewer teams, everyone will be complaining that they cannot get into the tournament but I am sure the college coaches will appreciate having to attend fields that are closer in proximity. It’s a double edge sword and if people think they can run a tournament that makes everyone happy, go for it! STING

COLLEGE BALL
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The 2008 version of the Tennessee Lady Vol softball team kicked off its yearly slate by serving as host to the annual Tennessee Lady Vol Fall Classic over Oct. 20-21 at the new Sherri Parker Lee Softball Stadium. The Big Orange went 6-0 overall while outscoring their opposition, 57-3, and posting four run-rule victories.
Returning senior pitcher Megan Rhodes picked up three victories from the circle while striking out 13 and 12, respectively, in triumphs over Division I-A opponent, Western Kentucky (6-1), and Chipola College (8-0, 6 inn.), the defending National Junior College (NJCAA) Champions. The Nashville, Tenn., native also entered against Walters State in relief to combine with junior Danielle Pieroni on a 2-0, one-hit shutout and 14 strikeouts. Pieroni bested Milligan, 12-1 (5 inn.), by allowing one run and just two hits to go along with seven K’s. Freshman Ashton Ward debuted as a member of the Orange & White with victories over Vol State (12-0, 5 inn.) and Methodist (16-1, 5 inn.). In the contest against Vol State, Ward hurled a one-hit shutout with six K’s, while permitting just one run on a single hit with nine punch-outs versus Methodist.
CAL STATE FULLERTON/UCLA THRUWAY SERIES
February 8-10. Games will be played at Fullerton and UCLA, involving the host schools with Oklahoma, Santa Clara, Santa Barbara and Nevada. A new series to our knowledge and not a lot of detail. Oklahoma will kick off the season with a showdown of two softball powerhouses as the Sooners face UCLA on Friday, Feb. 8 in Westwood Calif., as part of the Cal State Fullerton/UCLA Freeway Series. OU will also face UCSB, Reno and Cal State Fullerton in the season-opening tournament that runs Feb. 8-10.
(Having migrated with half of the California population up the 405 on Wednesday, and knowing the travails of reaching Fullerton, SPY hopes the lag time is generous. BTW, I asked an observer at Surf City, wearing a Santa Clara cap, if he knew the All American from Santa Clara who played in the 1945 Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma State. Blank. Herman Weidemeyer. If you’re wearing the colors, you gotta know the history.)
NPF NEWS
Rockford Makes
Another Move with Chicago
Thunder Deals Second Round Pick for Additional Picks
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford Thunder announced today that they have traded
its second round draft pick, No. 9 overall, to the Chicago Bandits for their
third and fourth round picks in the upcoming NPF Senior Draft.
Rockford will receive the No. 13 and No. 19 overall picks in the trade from
Chicago and currently hold the No. 3, 13, 15 and 19 picks in the draft.
The move, which follows a move made on Monday sending Amanda Freed to
Chicago, helps to improve the teams positioning in the draft for the 2008
season.
"This is a move that makes a lot of sense for the team," stated Aaron M.
Moore, Thunder general manager. "We are going to rely on some youngsters
coming out of college next season quite heavily and this gives us an
additional pick to do so."
For more information on the Thunder or to purchase season tickets for the
2008 season, contact Aaron M. Moore, general manager, at (815) 965-7000 or
amoore@thunderprofastpitch.com. The discounted price for season tickets
expires on October 31, 2007. For additional information on the team, visit
them on the web at www.thunderprofastpitch.com.
GO GOLFERS
A recent study
found the average American golfer walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found American golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer a
year.
That means, on average, American golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon.
