On This Day in History

Embarrassed about dropping that fly ball? You don’t even know what the word means. In 1936, at the Olympics when Adolf Hitler was determined to demonstrate German superiority to the world, 26-year old Marie Dollinger dropped the baton in a team sprint.

In the immortal words of H.L. Mencken, the bard of Baltimore, for every great social problem, the US Congress has a solution which is immediate, imminent, expensive, and wrong. On this day in 1919, to cope with the evils inflicted by demon rum, Congress passed the Volstead Act, starting prohibition – which gave us flappers, speakeasys, gang wars, Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, etc etc.

On this day in 1462, Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba. In 1950, Cuba was rediscovered by Meyer Lansky, and we got rum, sugar and art deco nightclubs.

On this day in 1636, Harvard University was established. In veritas, they’re really not sure any other university is worthy of the name.
