OCTOBER 29 UPDATE
RENEGADES
TOURNAMENT
A determinate answer will be posted on the San Diego
Renegades web site later today:
http://www.sdrenegades.org.
The following statement was posted at 630pm, CA time.
As of
5:30 Pm
the Air Pollution Control
District has stated that our air in most of the county has moved from the
unhealthy level to the moderate level. Winds are expected to continue to move
the air pollutants to the East. They expect the air to be in the good range by
Friday. I am monitoring it and getting updates. The fires themselves pose
no threats to any areas we have scheduled to play games and are far away now.
With that said, I have also received many calls from coaches and parents wanting
to know status. I have also received several calls from major college coaches
who are flying out tomorrow. There is a lot on the line for many players and
teams as well as the college coaches who need those players. Certainly none of
those issues are more important then safety and health issues for our players
but they have to be considered along with the total decision process. We also
have had to factor in umpire availability, room reservations and travel
arrangements. There is not a current date available to re-schedule the showcase
that would be a benefit to the players or colleges. It would not be good to
cancel too early and have a player lose a chance to be recruited if by Friday
the air quality improved and the fields were playable. Considering all that
we have decided to continue as if we will play on this weekend. The City of
Escondido
will be open tomorrow morning.
We will check with them to be sure we have a permit to play. At the same time we
will monitor the air quality in the morning and then again in the afternoon. By
1:00 pm
tomorrow I will post the status on the webpage so teams needing to
change room reservations are still within the twenty-four hour window. Teams
that feel they cannot wait or who have anxious parents or continued concerns for
their teams can email me direct for resolution. There are several teams willing
to step in at the last moment. Teams attending should also be ready for last
minute schedule changes as a result. The people I know and trust all think we
will be a go as long as the City agrees tomorrow. Check the webpage often
tomorrow and be sure to “refresh”
EMILY ZAPLATOSCH
The very versatile starting catcher for the UCLA Bruins was
a three-time All State goalkeeper at Scottsdale is putting her soccer skills
back to work as the goalie for UCLA’s injury-ridden soccer team – for the
remainder of the season. Enily
replaces injured senior Jaclyn Harwood as backup to starting goalie Ariana
Criscione. Emily will train twice a
week and be available for every game but the soccer staff, who met with Bruin
coach Sue Enquist, will keep her out of contact drills to keep her healthy for
softball.

Between losing broadband service yesterday (still not
working), medical appointments, etc., SPY has not had time to cross-match team
letter designations (A1,A2) with scores which are posted the same way.

THE FIRES

The Washington Post Thursday carried a really heartbreaking
picture of 3-year old Mariah Glasser, hugging father Dan, as he looks at the
remains of their home in Crest. The television crew truck was engulfed by
flames minutes after this picture was taken.
