OCTOBER 2 UPDATE

THE GOLD CHAMPIONSHIP DATE

The Board of Directors of ASA voted to keep the August 9-15 date for the 2004 ASA Gold National Championship, which will be held in Marietta , GA.   However, proponents of changing the date, by moving it to an earlier date so as not to conflict with the school calendar in Georgia , have indicated they introduce an amendment to the ASA Code at this year’s ASA annual meeting in Orlando .  SPY notes that amendments to the Code require a difficult-to-achieve two-thirds majority.

STEPHANIE PHILLIPS

Stephanie Phillips, the cancer-stricken pitcher from Fayetteville , GA , had to undergo further surgery on Wednesday.  Our prayers are with her.

You’ve been great, readers, in responding to Stephanie.

THE SQUEEZE PLAY

Wasn’t that exquisite?  Two out, two on in the 12th, and the Oakland A’s win on a squeeze bunt.  Smoltz surviving the 8th to dominate the 9th.  Almost as exciting as a good softball game.

JUNIOR WORLD

The USA Junior World team will play a double-header Monday night against the San Diego Renegades.  The JO team will be in training this weekend and Monday-Tuesday before flying to China .

THIRD WATCH IN SAN JOSE

Turns out that Rob Piper, known in the softball world as head coach of the San Jose Lady Sharks 18A, is also deputy chief of the San Jose Fire Department.  Rob informs that Gillian Boxx has completed paramedic college, and is now taking her paramedic ride-alongs with the Oakland FD, and comes back to San Jose next month as a full-fledged firefighter/paramedic.

FINCH & MASCARENAS

Jennie Finch and Tony Mascarenas are two of the coaches for this weekend's clinic at Cal Ripken's Yard in Aberdeen, MD.

WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO?

Three teenage boys from good schools in our county are charged with beating to death another teenager,, also from a good school.  The published reports indicate they continued to punch him in the head, despite his pleas for them to stop.  Across the Potomac , a female HS soccer player has been accused of assaulting two players from another school.
