OCTOBER 4 UPDATE
ASA COUNCIL MEETING
The Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, will host its 74th National Council Meeting at the Starr Pass Marriott in Tucson, AZ November 12-18.
During the 2005 Gold tournament in Salinas, many Gold coaches advised they want to see pool games restored – not to seed the bracket but to give more exposure to their full rosters. Yet, Gold coaches did not speak up during the meeting, and few if any approached ASA Executive Director Radigonda during the tournament. If you want changes made, on pool play or any issue, tell your local ASA Commissioners – before they vote in November.

OKTOBERFEST – FROM AFAR
SPY renews its request for scores and other data from these fall tournaments. We regret not receiving data on the Stockton Showcase.
Now, SPY cannot attend either Oktoberfest. Doctors at Johns Hopkins found a malignant growth under my right eyelid today, and surgery is scheduled for October 19. Two other lesions have also been detected and will be removed October 24. Fortunately, the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins is considered the world’s finest. The Stark clinic, where today’s examination was conducted, is chaired by Dr. Walter J. Stark, who happens to be my cousin. (His daughter Melissa was on the sidelines in seasons past for Monday Night Football.) The surgery is not extraordinary, assuming that the growth is not too invasive, but I will be wearing a patch over my right eye – and that may be the biggest complication – my left eye was knocked out in an accident years ago and is about two clicks above being merely ornamental.

TIGER SOFTBALL DOMINATES IN FOUR WINS IN FALL CLASSIC
BATON ROUGE – The LSU softball team did not allow a run in four games in the 2005 Fall Collegiate Classic, as the Tigers outscored their opponents 42-0 last weekend at Tiger Park.
LSU began the weekend with a 10-0 win over East Mississippi Junior College. The Tigers continued with a 12-0 win over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. On Sunday, LSU defeated LSU-Eunice, 9-0, before closing out the tournament with an 11-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
As a team, LSU hit .516 on the weekend, which improved to an astounding .620 with runners in scoring position. Equally impressive, the Tigers allowed only two hits in 28 innings and did not allow a runner to reach third base against them, while committing no errors.
Senior Lauren Castle led the team with a .727 batting average on the weekend, going 8-for-11, followed by sophomore Andrea Smith with a 6-for-9 performance for a .667 average. Senior Stephanie Hill went 7-for-11 for a .636 average with a home run, while sophomore Erika Sluss hit .600 and sophomore Vanessa Soto hit .556.
In the circle, freshman Dani Hofer pitched nine innings of no-hit softball. She allowed just one walk with 16 strikeouts. Junior Emily Turner allowed two hits in nine innings with three walks and 19 strikeouts. Sophomore Megan Jolly went five innings and allowed just one walk with six strikeouts, while sophomore Tiffany Garcia pitched five innings with no hits, three walks and seven strikeouts.
Also providing multiple-hits on the weekend were Turner and Leslie Klein with three each. Camille Harris, Quinlan Duhon, Lauren Delahoussaye and Killian Roessner each had two hits. Dee Dee Henderson was a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen bases, while Fallon Fisher was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs. Heidi Robin got a hit in her only at-bat and Shannon Stein provided a walk and a sacrifice.
The Tigers will open the 2006 campaign at home in the Purple and Gold Classic from Feb. 10-12. LSU will take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin and South Dakota State in the three-day tournament.
