USA Claims Fifth Shutout with 12-0 Win

Maunabo, Puerto Rico - Backed by 12 hits and a combined no hitter by the pitching staff, the Jr. Women's National team claimed its fifth shutout of the tournament with a 12-0 win over Argentina at the 2006 II Jr. Women's Pan American Championships. Offensively the team has out hit opponents 55-9 while the pitching staff has combined for two no-hitters.

Ashley Brignac (River Ridge, La.) started in the circle and was responsible for the first five of six out with four strikeouts and a groundout to pitcher. She worked three complete innings, striking out seven for her second win of the season.  Lindsey Sisk (Murrieta, Calif..) came in and pitched the two final innings, issuing two walks with one strikeout.

The offense exploded in the first inning with the top four in the lineup registering hits. Ashley Hansen (Chandler, Ariz.) singled advancing to third on a single by Brittany Lastrapes (Laguna Niguel, Calif.). Bianca Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.) doubled for two RBI and scored on a double by Maggie Viefhaus (Pacific, Mo.). Tiffany Huff (Saugus, Calif.) reached on a throwing error by shortstop, with Viefhaus scoring the fifth run of the game. A single off the bat of Monica Harrison (Garden Grove, Calif.) plated Alissa Haber (Newark, Calif.) for the sixth and final run of the first inning.

Argentina responded shutting down the U.S. offense until the fourth inning when the U.S. tacked on two more runs. Lastrapes took a ball high and to center field for her first triple as a member of the National team to start off the scoring drive. A single by Mejia scored Lastrapes with the other run coming off a walk issued to Rosey Neill (Laguna Hills, Calif.).

Harrison singled to lead off the fifth and scored on a single by Lastrapes. Both Lastrapes and Mejia got their third hits of the game in the fifth inning, each scoring a run with Viefhaus turning in her second double for a RBI and run scored. Haber rounded out the scoring drive with her first hit of the game, a two-RBI double that left the U.S. with a 12-0 advantage.

Needing only three outs to get their fifth win of the tournament, the team had to wait nearly 20 minutes to take the field due to a rain delay. Sisk allowed the first runner on with a walk but a double play, the third in five games by the team, cleared the base paths.

The team will play two games tomorrow before their final game of pool play on Wednesday. Complete coverage of this event including results, recaps, standings, player journals and photo galleries can be found at www.usasoftball.com <http://www.usasoftball.com/> .
