USA Hands Columbia 12-0 Loss
USA Softball report
Juncos, Puerto Rico - The Jr. Women's National Team combined for 14 hits to
claim their second shutout, 12-0, at the II Jr. Women's Pan American qualifier
today against Columbia. The team will look to push its streak to 3-0 as they
take on host team Puerto Rico at 5:00 PM.
Kenzie Fowler (Tucson, Ariz.), the youngest member of the squad, was the
starting pitcher against Columbia. She allowed the first Columbia batter a hit
to shortstop but that was the only hit she allowed in three innings of play with
four strikeouts.
In the first inning, Maggie Viefhaus (Pacific, Miss.) battled deep into the
pitch count in her first at bat before sending the 13th pitch of her at bat off
the left field fence for a triple scoring Bianca Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.) who
reached on a fielders choice.
To lead off the third inning, Ashley Hansen (Chandler, Ariz.) took the first
pitch and ripped it over the center fielder's head to give her an in the park
homerun. A sacrifice fly by Neena Bryant (Placentia, Calif.) plated Viefhaus who
singled to get on base. Megan Elliott (Prince Frederick, MD) continued the
scoring drive, tripling to center field scoring Tiffany Huff (Saugus, Calif.)
who reached on a fielder's choice and Brittany Lastrapes (Laguna Niguel, Calif.)
who pinch ran for Rosey Neill (Laguna Hills, Calif.). Neill singled for one of
four hits in the third inning, when the team increased its lead to 5-0.
The team almost doubled its run production from innings one through three in the
fourth inning, with seven runs. The team put together a string of six hits
including two triples and a single. The inning was highlighted by triples by
Hansen and Ashley Brignac (River Ridge, La.), who made her first appearance in
the batters box after earning the win for Team USA yesterday against Venezuela.
Alissa Haber (Newark, Calif.) singled and an error by the right fielder allowed
the ball to go to the fence. Haber capitalized on this and would score along
with Monica Harrison (Garden Grove, Calif.) who singled to reach base.
Lindsey Sisk (Murrieta, Calif.) who came in at the top of the fourth inning
allowed two hits, striking out three. Fowler earned the win for the U.S.
