Caguas, Puerto Rico - The Jr. Women's National Team went a full seven innings
but the outcome was the same, a U.S. victory, as they defeated Canada 3-0 at the
2006 II Jr. Women's Pan American Championships. The team squares off tomorrow
against Argentina (3-1) at 12:30 PM as they look to remain the only un-defeated
team in the nine-team field of the tournament.
Donna Kerr (San Diego, Calif.), in her second start of the tournament, was in
the zone retiring the first five batters with strikeouts. After working four
innings, Kerr was relieved by Kenzie Fowler (Tucson, Ariz.). Kerr finished the
game with seven strikeouts and two hits for the win, moving her to 2-0 in two
starts.
The team put up two hits with singles by Ashley Hansen (Chandler, Ariz.) and
Monica Harrison (Garden Grove, Calif.) but could not get a run across the plate
until the third inning when a double by Maggie Viefhaus (Pacific, Mo.) put the
team in scoring position. A sacrifice bunt by Tiffany Huff (Saugus, Calif.)
advanced Brittany Lastrapes (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), who entered as pinch runner
for Viefhaus. Alissa Haber (Newark, Calif.) ripped a ball to right field that
looked like an out but the ball dropped short of the centerfielder, giving Haber
her first triple of the tournament and the game its first run. A sacrifice fly
by Harrison plated Haber, giving Kerr a 2-0 lead to take into the fourth.
Kerr allowed her first hit of the game in the fourth but a pick off by catcher
Huff to second baseman K'Lee Arredondo (San Diego, Calif.) cleared the bases.
She allowed one more hit but kept the runner at first with a strikeout issued to
the next batter.
Arredondo led off the fifth getting her first hit of the game, a single to
center field. Hansen took her first pitch for single to center field, causing
Canada to pull starter McIntosh. A groundout by Bianca Mejia (Sylmar, Calif.)
scored Hansen, giving the U.S. a 3-0 lead.
The U.S. lead was threatened in the sixth when Canada put up two hits to put
runners on first and third but a strikeout by Fowler stopped the threat leaving
two runners stranded on. In the bottom of the seventh with two on and the tying
run at the plate, the U.S. defense kept all runners off with a groundout to
third, giving the U.S. its fourth win of the tournament.
