BATBUSTER FALL CLASSIC

The field includes 14 brackets of four teams each, who will play pool on Saturday, October 3, and championship rounds on Sunday at the Lake School.  Pool games are at Los Amigo HS, Bryant School, Westminster Park, Maxwell Park, Mark Twain and Toyon Park.  (SPY remembers Lake School; parking authority issued me a ticket; at first, the female cop hesitated because I told her I had diplomatic immunity; she checked and informed me Garden Grove does not honor diplomatic immunity.)

PASSAGES

Bonjour Tristesse is considered a romantic classic, a tale of illicit love remarkable in its depth, especially given that Francoise Sagan was only 19 when she wrote it.  Sadly, none of her other works were up to this standard.  Sagan died this past week.  (Confirms my long-held view that the average French teenage girl knows more about being a woman than any other nationality.) Frabcoise was 69.

Russ Meyer was widely recognized, even honored for his soft porn flicks; his wife Eve was a pin-up in many a highschool locker in the 60s.  Dead at 82.

Until Vietnam, Robert Capa’s photograph of a soldier being shot during the Spanish Civil War was the most dramatic capture of the moment of death.  Then, Eddie Adams took the photo of a South Vietnamese police chief executing a Viet Cong prisoner – a shot to the head at point blank range.  Adams is dead at 71.  Also dying this past week: Marvin Mitchelson, the divorce lawyer who pioneered palimony cases.

OJAI

Get away from the density and hustle of LA and Orange County, drive up the PCH and enjoy Ventura, a town with a real mainstreet, small shops, good food at reasonable prices, then treat yourself with a trip up Hwy 33 to the quaint little town of Ojai, where life and the people are gentle, unhurried, and even stop for pedestrians crossing in the middle of the street.  Rather artsy community with several galleries; a coffee shop with a very impressive array of coffees from around the world; locally baked bread and pastry.  There are a number of fine dining establishments in and around Ojai.  The quality of life is appreciated beyond the world of the 5, 10, 405, 91 etc.
