GORDON’S PANTHERS COACHING RANKS

After posting the announcement that Kelly Inoue Perez will be the new head coach at UCLA, with Lisa Fernandez as an assistant, readers reminded me of other Larry Mays disciples who were coaching, starting with Deanna Mays Gumpf, head coach at Notre Dame, and Kristy Schroeder at Santa Barbara.  DeDe Weiman is assistant voach at Fullerton.  Kim Souder (Kostyk) was given the head coaching job at Long Beach after Pete Manarino left.   Anna Farrara (Smith) was recently given the head coaching position at the University of La Verne -- in the same conference as the University of Redlands whose second year head coach is Mays’ step-daughter Laurie Nevarez (Fritz).

MISSOURI HIRES EARLEYWINE

University of Missouri Director of Athletics Mike Alden announced that Ehren Earleywine has been named the eighth Head Softball Coach for the Tiger program. A native of Jefferson City, Mo., Earleywine comes to Mizzou after serving as head coach at Georgia Tech for three seasons and assistant coach two years prior.

GEORGIA TECH HIRES PERKINS

The former Georgia Associate Head Coach helped guide UGA to a pair of SEC titles over the last four seasons. Perkins takes the reins of a program that has made five straight NCAA appearances and captured two Atlantic Coast Conference titles in the last five years. The Yellow Jackets return ACC Freshman of the Year and record-setting home run hitter Whitney Haller and all-ACC outfielder Caitlin Lever.  In six seasons at Georgia, Perkins helped build a strong program that was ranked in the Top 10 the last four years. The team made five straight NCAA appearances, including a Super Regional berth in 2005, won two Southeastern Conference titles and posted a 313-104 record.

OTHER COACHING CHANGES

Checking with NFCA, there are other coaching assignments which SPY missed while traveling this summer:

Seton Hall asst Jay Nelson is now head coach at Rutgers

Amanda Lehotak moved up from asst to head coach at Jacksonville

Sue Carpenter and Jay Skrabacz, who were head coach and asst at Cedarville, have become assistants at Wright State

Former Akron head coach Julie Wright is assistant coach at Wisconsin

The Akron head coach is Julie Jones, formerly head coach at Cleveland State; Julie Pratt moved over to Akron as asst

Matt Meuchel, asst head coach at Nevada, is an asst at Oklahoma State

Clarissa Crowell, asst at Syracuse, also joined Oklahoma State

UIC asst Leigh Ann Ellis is the new asst at NC State

Paige Smith and Lauren Taylor are the new assts at St John’s

AMERICAN CULTURE ON THE BALANCE BEAM

A 15-year old in Wisconsin gets a warning about tobacco use and shoots the much-loved principal to death.  Two days before, a middle-aged man takes six girls hostage at another rural school, in Colorado, sexually assaults some of them, then kills one girl before killing himself.  In Northern Virginia, a 16-year old driver has an accident, injuring a friend, then commits suicide.

The news media print and flash these stories endlessly.

But, the entertainment media devotes just as much attention to the burning questions of the day.  Which lover impregnated Anna Nicole Smith?  How did her son die?  Which boyfriend is currently sleeping with Lindsay Lohan?  Is Nicole Ritchie too thin?  How thin is too thin?  Can Rosie and Barbara co-exist?  Should Matt Leinart marry his pregnant former girlfriend, another USC athlete; broke up a year ago but, as SI says, obviously remained close friends?

THE BAMBINO and other September 30 happenings

On this day in 1927, Babe Ruth hit his record 60th home run off Tom Zachary.  Ironically, Babe played his last game as a Yankee on this day in 1934.  The Sultan of Swat went 0-3.

Memorable day for many reasons.  James Dean, a superb acting talent, died in a car wreck in 1955.  The ill-fated Munch Agreement to appease Hitler was signed in 1934.  In 1857, the US occupied tiny Howland Island, best remembered as the refueling stop which Amelia Earhart failed to reach.  Hoover Dam was dedicated in 1934.  Auto maker Fritz von Opel made the first manned rocket flight in 1929.  Fordham played Waynesburg in the first televised football game in 1939, the same day German and Russia partitioned Poland.  In 1941, 3,721 Jews were buried alive at Babi Yar ravine (near Kiev) Ukraine.  Top Nazis (22) were convicted at Nuremberg in 1946.  The famed Berlin Airlift ended on this day in 1949; saved a city and helped prevent war with the Soviets.  The Nautilus was launched in 1954.  The Flintstones premiered in 1960.  James Meredith enrolled at Ole Miss in 1962.  The first 747 flew in 1968.  Iran and Iraq were at war in 1980.  Dodger Orel Herschiser pitched 59 consecutive scoreless innings (1988).

WE NEED MORE  GRANDMOTHERS IN COURT!!!

Why Lawyers should never ask a witness a question if they aren't prepared for the answer:

In a trial, a Southern small town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand ... a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"

She responded, "Why, yes I do know you, Mr. Williams.  I've know you since you were a young boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to anything  more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The Lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?"

She again replied, "Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women, one of them was your wife. Yes, I know him." The Defense attorney almost died.

The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench, and in a very quiet voice, said: "If either of you bastards asks her if she knows me, I'll throw your sorry asses in jail for contempt."
