MEMORIAL TO SUE CANDREA
Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Xi Gamma Theta chapter, friends and family members are raising funds to donate a fountain to the City of Casa Grande in honor of Coach Mike Candrea’s coaching the USA Olympic team to a Gold Medal in Athens – and to memorialize Sue Candrea’s “support and love for the team, and the Candrea’s love and support for the community of Casa Grande.” Donations are being made to the sorority c/o Jackie Huston, 380 East Cactus Wren Court, Casa Grande, AZ 85222.
A fundraiser, “Night of Dreams,” was held November 18 at the Paramount Theatre in Casa Grande.
SPY got this first-hand report from Ellen Hudson, Sue’s Mother.
In the Paramount theater they had a short program starting with a film of the Olympic team. The mayor spoke and then some representatives from Sue's sorority and other people. All in all it was a wonderful evening.
There, on the marquee of the theater it said "In memory of Sue Candrea." But it was a great affair. There were tables set up in the middle of the street with white tablecloths on them and huge tables of elegant finger foods, all very nicely displayed. Even raw oysters on the half shell. The high school band put on a little concert, of course, playing the U of A fight song. The whole U of A softball team showed up. After everyone ate we went into one of the stores where all the decorated Christmas trees were set up and the silent auction began. The trees were beautiful. There was one decorated in the colors of Arizona State and one in the colors of University of Arizona. Both those trees went for 1000.00 each. I successfully bid on a tree decorated in the Tuscan style which reminded me so much of Sue. Marci got a tree decorated by the mayor which looked like a water fountain.
