SUNDAY MARCH 17 COLLEGE

GARMAN CLASSIC

Winners Semi-final

#5 Arizona vs #16 ULL

The 19-6 Wildcats scored in the top of the 1st – in the usual fashion.  Leading off, Caitlin Lowe beat out an infield hit, then scored with one out on Kristie Fox’s double to left center.  Arizona upped the score to 5-0 in the 3rd in untypical fashion – Sarah Akamine, an always dependable singles hitter, cranked a grand slam – the first homer of the freshman’s career.  Lowe, Chelsi Mesa had singled and Fox walked ahead of Akamine’s shot.  Taryne Mowatt was pitching at a high level – 7 Ks in the first three innings against the 28-6 Cajuns, one of three teams undefeated in pool play – but she created a challenge for herself in the bottom of the 2nd.  Codi Runyan singled.  Karli Hubbard sacrificed her to 2nd.  Lana Bowers hit back to Mowatt who had pinch runner Courtney Trahan trapped between 2nd and 3rd.  Trahan sped toward 3rd and Mowatt inexplicably threw to 2nd – but Bowers was holding at 1st and Trahan was safe at 3rd, with one out.  No sweat.  Mowatt struck out Meagan Godwin and Vallie Gaspard.  Mowatt struck out two in the 3rd and nailed two of three in the 4th.  The third inning notwithstanding, Cajun freshman was having a decent day, striking out 7 Wildcats through four innings.  Mowatt struck out the side again in the 5th.  Melissa Verde walked and Lacey Bertucci singled in the 6th, the second hit off Mowatt – who struck out two more .  Lowe led the 7th with her third single. Mesa reached on an error at 2nd. Fox walked again loading the bases with Akamine on deck.  And Akamine nailed it – a second grand slam over the left field fence – a record for this tournament.  In the 7th, Hubbard reached on an error at short but was erased when Bowers ground into a fielder’s choice at short.  With two out, Mowatt fanned Adele Files (14) for the final out and the game.  Mowatt improved to 15-6.

Arizona advances to the championship game at 1pm against the winner of Oklahoma vs DePaul.

#6 Oklahoma 3, DePaul 2 (8)

DePaul comes to the game undefeated, having downed Texas, Penn State, CS Fullerton and, in the quarterfinals, Fresno State.  Oklahoma has beaten Pacific and Arizona in pool, losing that no hitter to NC State, then run-ruling Northridge in the quarterfinals.

The Blue Demons notched the first run in the top of the 5th.  Sandy Vojik walked and scored.  Sooner Samantha Ricketts smoked a homer over the left field fence to start the 6th.  \

In the 8th under tie-breaking rules, Shea Warren, on 2nd, advanced on a sacrifice by Kate Sheaks.  Amber Patton hit into a fielder’s choice; a perfect throw home was dropped by Sooner catcher Lindsey Vandever, and Warren scored.

Oklahoma placed Savannah Long on 2nd.  Amber Flores hit a sac bunt but the throw to 1st sailed and Long scored the tying run.  Ricketts was intentionally walked; Iver McDonald went to 1st as the pinch runner.  Susan Ogden grounded to 2nd; the fielder held the ball after the put-out and Flores scored the winning run.

Championship

#6 Oklahoma run-rules #5 Arizona 11-0

The Sooners, who prevailed in pool 6-2, broke out on top in the 1st.  Norrelle Dickson singled, and took 2nd on the error.  Savanna Long ground out to 3rd, and Amber Flores lofted a high fly to  left center which the very fleet Caitlin Lowe caught at the fence.  Samantha Ricketts doubled in Dickson.  Susan Ogden’s single scored Ricketts.  2-0.  The Wildcats had two runners in the 1st – Chelsi Mesa singled and Sarah Akamine walked but no score against Sooner DJ Mathis.

Jamie Fox and Amber Spaulding reached on fielding errors to start the Sooner 2nd.  Dickson scored Fox but Spaulding was out on a close play at home on Long’s bunt.  Flores was hit by a pitch to load the bases, two out.  Ricketts crushed a grand slam to deepest center, 7-0.  (Akamine was the hero of Arizona’s previous game, the only Wildcat to ever hit two grand slams in one game.)  Ogden reached on Akamine’s throwing error, Arizona’s fourth in the game.  7-0. In the bottom, Laine Roth walked with one out, but was forced on a fielder’s choice hit to short by K’Lee Arredondo.  Adrienne Acton flied out to left.

Fox led the OU 3rd, reaching on another error at short.  Spaulding ground out to short.  Traci Dickinson doubled to left, rbi, 8-0.  Dickson (3-3) singled, rbi, 9-0.  Arizona put Samantha Hoffman on the mound, her first-ever appearance in a Wildcat uniform.  Long flied out to right.  Flores lined out to short.  Lowe, who looked at a third strike in her first at bat, singled.  Mesa struck out.  Fox lofted a high fly to center.  Akamine singled to left.  Jenae Leles ground out to 2nd.

Ricketts opened the OU 4th, greeting Hoffman with a towering homer over the right field fence, 10-0, her second of the game.  Amber Flores bid tallyho to a pitch she drover over the left field fence, the Sooners third homer, 11-0.  Fox and Spaulding walked; Dickinson flied out to left.  Dickson ground into a fielder’s choice at short.  Callista Balko bounced back to Mathis. Roth was hit by a pitch.  Arredondo forced Roth, 8-6.  Acton bunted bfor a hit, Arizona’s fourth.  With two on, Lowe worked a 3-2 count and looked at a third strike.

Pinch hitter Iver McDonald walked to start the OU 5th.  Pinch hitter Stacia Aleman ground into a 5-4 force.  Pinch hitter Mariee Mena fouled out.  Pinch hitter Jade Prather singled.  Pinch hitter Jessica Legendre looked at a third strike.  Mesa became the fifth strikeout.  Fox doubled to left, the Wildcats fifth hit.  With Jill Malina running at 2nd, Akamine ground out to 1st.  Leles popped up to short to end the game.

Oklahoma wins the Judi Garman Classic, only the fourth team to win the event more than once.  Arizona had won the Classic four times, the Washington Huskies twice, and CS Fullerton 9 times.  Oklahoma won the event in 1997.

Arizona was last run-ruled in April 2005, a 9-1 loss to UCLA.

Oklahoma is 32-2.  Arizona is 21-7.

Norrelle Dickson, 3-4, is now 9 hits away from the Sooner hit record of 293 held by Kristin Vesely.

Consolation

North Carolina State 6, #4 Arizona State 4 (8)

The Tar Heels won on Jen Chamberlain’s 2-run double with one out in the 8th.  With Megan Dalthorp on 2nd as the ITB runner, pitcher Katie Burkhart hit Heather Gelbard.  Jennifer Patterson hit into a fielder’s choice but ASU failed to get an out when Dalthorp scampered back to 3rd under the attempted tag.  That set the stage for Chamberlain.  The game ended when the Pack closed out the Sun Devils on a line drive double play. Burkhart took the loss, after relieving Megan Elliott in the 5th.  Abbie Sims was the winner, capping a tournament where she no-hit Oklahoma and won the Florida State game with a 2-run HR.
