LATE SATURDAY AND SUNDAY GAME NOTES
So Cal Athletics 2, So Cal Diamonds 0
The SCA’s were up 2-0 when the Diamonds, who struggled this weekend to score, loaded the bases in the top of the 4th with one out. Spectators were urging a hit, but the A’s nailed a K and a fielder’s choice. Katie Tamayo started the game for the A’s and pitched three innings. Christine Magee hurled for the Diamonds.
So Cal Athletics 1, Choppers 1
Tight game. The A’s scored their run when Cheyenne Mascarenas drove in Kimberly Pena. MacKenzie Oakes hurled for the A’s. Jennifer Manuel pitched for Choppers. Madison Shipman scored on Ashley Collier’s rbi. At a later point, the Choppers had runners on 1st and 2nd, one out, but were stifled by two fielder’s choice plays.
Firecrackers 0, Choppers 0
Observers agree lefty Destiny Rodino, now the Choppers’ lead pitcher, has improved since last summer, more break on her pitches, and more speed.
CA Cruisers 5, AZ Hotshots Davis 0
Kim Bruins pitched for Cruisers, for the Hotshots. Christina Zambrana staked the Cruisers to a 1-0 lead in the 1st with a solo home run. Melanie Fagaly’s roundtripper in the 2nd boosted the lead to 2-0. In their final at-bat, the Cruisers scored three runs, the first by Gina Grijalva on a double by Justeen Maeeva, the last two on a single by Jenna Rich. Brittany Campbell scored the Davis Hotshots’ run on an rbi by Stephanie Rieck. Ashley Quigley started and was relieved by Jamie Ladd.
CA Cruisers 5, Corona Angels Marty 1
Good pitching matchup – the Cruisers CeCe Luster and the Angels Kamrin May, both of whom are also showing improvement since the summer. But Luster had the stronger backing. Jenna Rich reached on an infield hit, advanced on a ground rule double by Melanie Fagaly, and scored on a sac fly by Courtney Craig. BB Bates notched the Angels run to tie the game at one run apiece. In the next inning, Samantha Dodd drove in two runs, and Rich added an rbi double. In the following inning, after the Angels put lefty Jessica Hall in the circle, Craig doubled and scored on a squeeze bunt. Despite the blustery wind and blowing sand, this last game of the night drew a number of college coaches and spectators.
AZ Hotshots Gold Gatti 13, So Cal Diamonds 0 (3)
The Hotshots, who performed well in every game, scored 12 runs in the 1st. Seemingly, every batter scored. Erin Arevalo started; Whitney Baker finished the shutout.
AZ Hotshots Gold Gatti 8, Team New Jersey 0
Dallas Escobedo and Meredith Whitney combined for a no-hitter. TNJ pitched Kalee Coonce, Brittany O’Donnell and Stephanie Speierman.
Firecrackers 12, Team New Jersey 1
Lisa Akamine and Rebecca Patton pitched two innings each; Ensley Gammel faced one batter. The Firecrackers scored 2 in the 1st; 3 in the 2nd; 6 in the 4th; and 1 in the 5th. Jessica Shults had 3 rbi, Hallie Wilson 2 rbi. Katherine VanBenschoten doubled and scored the TNJ run. Stephanie Speierman started for TNJ; Brittany O’Donnell relieved.
Firecrackers 6, So Cal Diamonds 1
Ensley Gammel and Rebecca Patton shared the Firecracker circle. Perelini Koria belted a solo HR and had 3 rbi for the game.
Sorcerer 6, SD Renegades Gold (Peronto) 2
Field 4 was like a wind tunnel in the Sahara. Game gave scouts first look at highly promising 2011 infielder Breana Kostreba, who jacked a 3-run homer which was the foundation for an early 4-0 Sorcerer lead for pitcher Chelsea Cohen. Brittany Balough started for Renegades. Whitney Massey scored the final Sorcerer run. Balough scored the first Renegade run.
Grapettes 5, Corona Angels Marty 1
The very impressive young Grapettes loaded the bases in the 1st and scored 3 runs, 2 on an rbi single by Christina Montoya. The count went to 5-0 the next inning on a two-run double by Alyssa Tiumalu. Alana Shull pitched for Grapettes. The Angels started Whitney Jones. Tatum Edwards relieved and was charged with the final Grapettes run. The Angels scored when Stephany LaRosa’s deep fly was dropped by the left fielder.
So Cal Breakers 4, Strike Zone Ford 0
Lefty Ciera Ashman pitched for the Breakers who scored four runs in one inning, led by a 3-run dinger by Brittani Bertussi. Lorena Vela scored the first run on a squeeze bunt by Kelly Majam.
ADD SATURDAY GAME NOTES
WA Ladyhawks 2, Batbusters 1
Mikayla Endicott for Ladyhawks, Hannah Williams for Batbusters. Taylor Thompson scored first run for Ladyhawks. Skylar Segura tied game for Batbusters. Lindsey Bright walked and scored the final run for Ladyhawks.
Batbusters 4, TX Impact Gold 2
Impact was up 2-0; the BBH scored 3 runs in bottom of the 2nd and 1 run in the 4th. Skylar Segura drove in 2 runs; Lauren Lastrapes 1. Teagen Gerhart pitched for BBH; Rachel Fox for Impact. Meagan May had two doubles.
Grapettes 6, Cruisers 5
The Grapettes, who led 5-2 at one point, were pushed hard by the Cruiser rally. Tiare Jennings homer, with Kristina DeAnda on base, had given the Grapettes an initial 2-0 lead. The lead went to 5-0 before the Cruisers scored two runs on a single by Nikole Afusia. In the 5th, with the score 5-3, the Cruisers loaded the bases and Justeen Maeeva scored on a walk, 5-4. That rally ended on a double play. In the bottom, Lauren Rivers doubled and scored on a single by Andrea Bolt, off relief pitcher Kim Bruins. Taylor Davis started for the Grapettes.
AZ Hotshots Gold Gatti 2, Firecrackers 0
This game was like a preview of things to come in college ball: sixteen players were committed to major universities, thirteen to Pac 10 schools. As expected this early morning game drew attention from beaucoup college scouts. Dallas Escobedo pitched for the Hotshots and racked 7 Ks with 2 hits. Ensley Gammel, one of the best 09 prospects, had 9 Ks. The door opened for the Hotshots in the bottom of the 6th. Escobedo reached on an error at 3rd. Mackenzie Popescue reached on a hit to short. Molly Smith doubled in the first run, Stefanie Carramusa singled in the second run. A walk to Mary Speil loaded the bases but the Firecrackers nailed two runners on consecutive force plays at the plate. We were very impressed by Annie Lockwood who anchors 3rd for the Hotshots; her sheer leaping ability and range were on display on several plays, including one where she raced behind 3rd, leaped up to catch the ball on the bounce, and threw the runner out at 1st. Annie is committed to Arizona State.
Choppers 3, AZ Hotshots Gold Gatti 3
The Hotshots opened with Erin Arevalo; the Choppers with very improved lefty Destiny Rodino. The Hotshots scored first. Speedy Elia Reid beat out an infield hit; Katelyn Boyd also reached on an infield hit; Brigette Delponte doubled in two runs and scored on Dallas Escobedo’s 6-3 grounder. The Choppers scored their runs off reliever Mackenzie Popescue. With two Choppers nailed on the bases, Amanda Collier and Lelani Bernardino drew back to back walks. Melissa Brown singled in a run with a bloop single, and two runs scored when Madison Shipman’s hit was misplayed in left field.
Choppers 2, Team New Jersey 1
Jennifer Manuel (2010) bested Stephanie Speierman. Lauren Gibson drove in the TNJ run after Elise Fortier reached on an error in right. TNJ had runners at 1st and 3rd in the 7th but couldn’t get the hit needed.
TX Impact Gold 3, American Pastime 3
Bailey Watts pitched for the Texans, Jessica English for Pastime. Nicole Morgan’s 2-run homer created a 2-2 tie and the Texans went up 3-2 when Anna Hernandez scored on an error at short. Brianna Garcia and Mara Rodriguez had rbi for Pastime.
Corona Angels Marty 6, OR Panthers 2.
The difference maker was Barthinia Bates 2 run homer for the Angels. Kamrin May pitched for the Angels. Kelli Eubanks for the Panthers.
Team New Jersey 4, So Cal Diamonds 1
Julia Rice pitched for the Diamonds, whose run was scored by Laura King on an rbi by Caylin Campbell. Brittany O’Donnell pitched for TNJ, which got its first run by Lauren Gibson in the 1st. Sidebar
The Santa Ana winds which halted traffic in parts of California and fanned the fires in Malibu also had an effect on the Surf City Tournament. These winds originate in an area of Nevada; indeed, on many fields, the swirling dust and sand caused temporary halts and eventually forced suspension of the Fillys vs Hotshots Neuman game and cancellation of the Fillys game against the So Cal Pumas. Two fields were watered but others at HB were not and, incredibly, ground crews were dragging while the wind was in full force, creating a near blind-out.
Fans and college scouts were disappointed that the final Pumas game was cancelled. During earlier games, several coaches were observing talented pitcher Jackie Manzer, 09.
