GAME NOTES (added at dawn on Saturday)

WA Bulldogs 9, MT Slappers 1

WP Kelly Lowe.  Heidi Pizer and Lauren Bukovi solo home runs.

WA Bulldogs 3, MN Irish 1

WP Erin Daugherty.  Bre Thomas doubled; scored on Heidi Pizer double.  Beth Hesketh doubled in last two runs.  LP Carla Anderson.

Lady Magic 7, WA Absolute Blast 2

Jolene Henderson (09, Cal) started, also singled.  Ally Cardy (2011) pitched a strong game; also singled and scored run.  Basically a 16U team, this very young roster shows much promise, eg, Danielle Henderson (2011) at catcher; Cheyenne Cordes (2011) at shortstop (she has decided to stop pitching); and Alyssa Smith (2011) who plays infield and outfield and had an rbi.  Brittany Jeans pitched for Blast.  Bailey Brewer scored.

Team New Jersey 2, WA Acers 0.

Rachel Gillen and Stephanie Speierman pitched for TNJ.  Kacia DeBroeck pitched for Acers.

Lake Breeze 5, NM Sundancers 1.

Cory Mattson and Kori Seidlitz shared pitching duties.  Facing NM pitcher Sandra Serna in the bottom of the 4th, and leading 3-1, Hillary Barker singled, Jill Barnett walked with one out, Carly Feiro beat out an infield hit to load the bases,  Alexandra Hudson and Ashley Todd drew consecutive rbi walks to force in the last two runs.

Sudden Impact 2, OR Panthers 2

Keli Eubanks pitched for Panthers, Katelyn Thomason for the Texans.

Team New Jersey 4, OR Panthers 0

Lauren Gibson jacked the first pitch of the game from McKenzie Dalthrop over the center field fence.  Two innings later, Rachel Gillen singled down the right field line; Gibson singled; Kourtney Salvarola singled in a run, and Gibson scored after Courtney Liddle’s groundout.

TX Impact Gold 7, WA Sidewinders Gold 0

Alyssa Garcia scored in the top of the 2nd to give Impact pitcher Bailey Watts a 1-0 lead.  In the 3rd, Taylor Petty reached on an error, scored on Megan Coronado’s groundout.  Facing Sidewinders pitcher Jordyn Kurtz in the 4th, Garcia singled, a fielder’s choice and an error yielded a run, and Lexy Bennett tripled in the 5th, scoring Gabby Banda and Coronado for a 5-0 lead.  Rachel Fox took over Impact pitching to start the 4th.  Katie Stanley started for the Sidewinders.

Team Florida vs NW Bullets

SPY did not get a final score, which was 0-0 when SPY left in the 3rd.  Anna Bertrand pitched for the Bullets.  We got a first look at the Floridian’s tall lefty, Sara Nevins, 2010, who used a sharp curve and speedy drop to strike out the side in the 3rd.

CA Grapettes 2, WA Ladyhawks Mil 0

A good turn for 2008 Grapettes pitcher Alana Shull, who was caught by Kristina DeAnda (09) who in consecutive games showed prowess at short and behind the plate.  Brittani Weatherford drove in Alexa Rivera and Christina Montoya with the runs.  This very young team with strong pitching and capable infield is one of Denny Gomes best.  At this park last week, the Grapettes scored 49 runs in five games.

Grapettes 5, Lake Breeze 1

Taylor Davis took the mound for Grapettes against Kori Seidlitz.  Alyssa Tiumalu closed out the Grapettes scoring with a sac fly.  DeAnda was a highlight reel at short.  Lake Breeze tallied in the bottom of the 4th on a home run by 09 shortstop Carly McEachran.

Impact Gold 9, Eastside Elite 0

Bree Brown (09) pitched for Impact.  Anna Hernandez tripled and scofred ; Gabby Banda walked and scored on a single to left by Nicole Morgan (2010).  Meagan May crowned the game with a mighty home run.  Brown struck out the side in the 2nd

Corona Angels Marty 13, So Cal Wicked 1

A lot of freshmen and sophomores played well in this tournament; fittingly, the first two runs of this game were scored by a 2010 and 2011 player.  Whitney Jones (2010) started for the Angels; and yielded the run to Wicked.  Another 2010 pitcher, lefty Jessica Hall, whom SPY praised in the summer, closed out the game for the Angels.  The run melee was topped by Taylor Edwards’ grand slam home run; yes, she’s also a 2010.  Alexa Limon 09 started for Wicked.  Another 09, Anne “reina” Gaber scored for Wicked.

Corona Angels Marty 3, AZ Desert Thunder 3

This late night game drew a large segment of the more than 100 college coaches on hand Friday (many more are scheduled to arrive Saturday).  Thunder started 09 Gabby Luciani; the Angels pitched Rebecca Arbino (Texas A&M).  Tatum Edwards, the other twin, led off with a single; Destinee Martinez (2010) was safe on an infield hit. Edwards scored on an error at 1st.  Whitney Jones singled; Stephany LaRosa (2011), a middle infielder with range; walked; Kaylan Howard drove in 2 runs with a single to left, 3-0.  Desert Thunder answered with a 2-run single by Shannel Blackshear and an rbi by Megan Downey, both 09s, to tie the game at 3-all.  The Angels scored two runs in the top of the 5th, but, time expired, and the score reverted back to the last complete inning, 3-3.

So Cal Wicked vs Desert Thunder.

SPY had to leave after one inning with Wicked up 2-1.  Wicked pitched Kari Gutierrez, an 09, against lefty Meghan McIntosh, also 09.  Wicked’s two runs included an rbi by Gutierrez.  Alexa Straton scored for Thunder, reaching on a fielder’s choice.  McIntosh singled to advance Straton, and Trista Thomas beat out an infield hit to load the bases.  Colleen Svancara, also an 09, walked to force in the run.

Sidebar.  Huntington Beach has eight very well maintained fields, spread out over an area the size of Delaware (but without those damned toll booths which stunt the economy of the Eastern seaboard).  Journeys to the concession stand become a hike; of course, like too many public parks, bathrooms have unsanitary jailhouse toilets.  But, SPY’s dislike for cold, hard steel is more than offset by having a golf cart with cushioned seats, which arrived just as the old legs were giving out.  Dan and Gary were lifesavers with that cart.

College coaches were peeved at some travel ball coaches who did not submit rosters in time to be printed in the college coaches book.  Most teams but not all had handouts.

And, there was incessant grumbling by travel ball coaches and parents about NFCA and NCAA forcing fall ball recruiting into the lamentable four-week window.  RFH
