Game Notes
The tournament was delayed 2 hours as groundskeepers dried out the fields following an early morning rain. The games in the first three brackets were limited to one hour; games the remainder of the day were 90 minutes. The games were played in very chill weather, with a brisk wind dropping the chill factor further. (When the games originally scheduled for (6:10 pm) finally began at 7pm under the lights, the handful of spectators left felt like Nanook of the North.) One-hour games are noted with an asterisk.
The very competitive games attracted 92 college coaches, with an additional 30-40 coaches expected on Saturday.
NY TC Tremors 4, NJ Pride 2*. Stacy Kuwik (09) pitched the win for the Tremors, who scored four runs in the 1st. Meg Garlasco (08) took the loss.
VA Shamrocks 3, SD Renegades 2*. One of the better games of the tournament. The Shamrocks scored all three runs in one inning to spot Caitlyn de la Haba a 3-0 lead against 09 Natalie Carmarda. Briana Hanafin led with a walk; March Bowdren, a 2010 who looked good at 3rd in this game, and Diondra Fryer were hit by pitches. An error by Kellie Fox at short led to the first run. Kristyn Sandberg hit into a fuekder’s choice, forcing Bowdren at home. Fryer scored on a bloop single by Colleen Carty (08). Marra Hvozdovic flied out but Haley Johnson was hit by a pitch forcing in the third run. The San Diego team narrowed the score two innings later. Isela Mohr (08) opened with a walk. With one out, Alix Johnson, a very impressive 2010 outfielder, singled to right. With two out, Fox walked. Shannon Tillettt (09) reached on an error by Sandberg at short, two runs scoring.
NJ Breakers 9, PA Blazing Angels 1.* Erica Cipolloni (2010) and Shannon Hutchinson (09) jacked home runs for the Breakers.
VA Shamrocks 1, NJ Inferno 0*. Karla Powell doubled and scored on an rbi by Brittany Black (09). Melanie Mitchell (09) pitched.
Team New Jersey 5, NC Lady Blues 2* The Blues, who were the first North Carolina team to qualify for Gold Nationals (2007) scored first, on an rbi by pitcher Christina Melton in the 1st. Stephanie Speierman pitched for TNJ, a team of all-stars assembled just for fall tournaments. Lauren Gibson led off with a walk. With one out, Kourtney Salvarola, a sharp fielding 2010 eyed by many colleges, also walked, and, with two out, Tammy Wray walked to load the bases. Katherine VanBenschoten drew the fourth walk of the inning, forcing in the first TNJ run. In the next inning, Speierman dropped a Texas Leaguer into right, Cyndil Matthew into run. Gibson launched a high fly which sailed over the fence for a 2-run homer. TNJ closed out the scoring with another inning which began with a walk issued to VanBenschoten by 2009 relief pitcher Kalie Lang. She scored on a catcher error. Kaley Coonce (2010) reached on an error at 2nd, and advancing, scored from 3rd, breaking an attempted rundown, scoring under the catcher’s glove. Taylor McGee, who excelled at shortstop last summer in the Blues' drive to Nationals, belted a two-out, 3-2 count over the fence in center for the Blues final run.
NY Rockland Thunder 7, Blazing Angels 0. Thunder had a 5-0 lead after two innings. Nicki Surkes and #10 had 2 rbi each, while Holli Bastinck had one rbi. In the top of the 3rd, with two on and two out, #25 drew a walk to load the bases, and Samantha Welsh (09) laced a 2-run single to right. Liz Weber and #7 shared mound duties for Thunder (not all of the players were listed in the college coaches guide). The Angels loaded the bases with two out in the last inning but couldn’t score. Liz Weber 2010 pitched four very efficient innings for Thunder.
SD Renegades 5, Team NJ 3. The Renegades’ offensive potential emerged in this afternoon game. TNJ pitched Brittany O’Donnell; Renegades countered with Tory Ferreria (08). kThe early going saw some fine defensive plays by TNJ infielders Lauren Gibson, Courtney Liddle and Kourtney Salvarola. Tammy Wray gave TNJ a 2-0 lead, driving in Gibson and Liddle. O’Donnell walked two batters, and was relieved by 2011 Rachel Gillen who surrendered the third walk of the inning, before surrendering a grand slam home run to prized 2010 outfielder Alix Johnson. Katherine VanBenschoten belted a homer for TNJ and Sammi Gallardo (2010) jacked a homer for San Diego to close out the scoring. Kellie Fox, who had a double in this game, showed the closely watching college coaches good range and a strong arm at short, but made her second error of the day.
NJ Inferno 6, Ill Chill 3. With Lindsey Jozefowicz on the rubber for Chill, and Alex Rodriguez for Inferno, Chill scored first on an rbi by 2011 Brittany Sanchez. Amy DeLuca started the comeback for Inferno with a double, and advanced on a sac by Olivia Galati. Cassie Reilly-Boccia walked. Chelsea Kehr drove in the tying run, and Andrea Huelsenbeck drove in the go-ahead run, 2-1. In the 5th, with the score now tied 3-all, DeLuca drove in the tie-breakder. A double by Galati made the score 5-3. Kehr singled in the final run. We were impressed by the fine work of Chill’s 09 shortstop Teresa Aguilar.
SD Renegades 9, WA Ladyhawks 6. Another game in which the Renegades paraded their offensive power. The Ladyhawks scored 5 runs in the 1st on a solo homer by Jordan Jewett, a double and hit batter, and a three-run homer by Jordan Goschie. The Renegades narrowed the margin in the bottom of the 1st with an rbi single by Shannon Tillett and a 3-run homer by Lauren Gellerman. Not done, the Renegades scored four more runs in the bottom of the 2nd. With the bases loaded, Isela Mohr drew an rbi walk. Kellie Fox singled in two runs. The Ladyhawks added another rbi by Goschie in the top of the 3rd. Tillett reached on a fielder’s choice, a run scoring. Fox scored the final Renegade run on a Tillett single.
Team NJ 1, WA Ladyhawks 0. This game confirmed the power of Lauren Gibson, a 2009 committed to Tennessee who slugged a line drive homer with two out in the 3rd. The game also served as a debut in this tournament of hard-throwing Kaley Coonce (2010) who throws curves and drops in the high 60’s. Coonce, the sister of collegiate hurler Kacie Coonce, struck out seven of the first nine batters, only yielding a single to Allyson Johnson who was nailed by TNJ catcher Courtney Liddle on a rope throw to 2nd. Coonce worked a ground ball game thereafter, but did record three more Ks before the game ended. The defensive gem was a 2-6-4 double play by TNJ, triggered by Liddle on a snap throw to Salvarola at 3rd who fired to Gibson at 2nd.
TX Storm (1) 3, Indiana Magic 3. We didn’t stay long enough to get all the details. Storm DeMarini had a 3-1 lead; Magic rebounded to tie. Storm had scored two runs on passed balls and a third run on a squeeze bunt. We will see both in action Saturday.
