Game Notes
NJ Inferno 3, Houston Power 0. This 8am game was effectively decided in the 1st when Inferno scored 2 runs. Cassie Reilly-Boccia drove in the first run, then scored on a passed ball. Amanda Berrios (who has just committed to Manhattan) doubled in the final run in the 4th. Olivia Galati pitched 5 innings of no-hit ball; Jen Ortega finished and surrendered the lone Power hit in the 6th.
NJ Intensity 9, Ill Chill 0. Kaitlyn Piazzolla, Cara Savarese and Ciera Bartolomeo-Damon slugged home runs.
FL Gold Coast Hurricanes 5, WA Ladyhawks 2. The Hurricanes are in mid-season form at this tournament, where they are undefeated. At the end of three, the GCH were up 4-1 behind Brittany Bowles (Georgia) who pitched the first four innings. Mary Kate Smith had 2 rbi; Lauren Hall and Nicole Bobb had single rbi’s. Bailey Harris pitched the last three innings for Ladyhawks. Caitlin Colvin and Teea Rogers drove in the LH runs.
NJ Intensity 9, VA Vienna Stars 6. Kristen Dolan pitched for Intensity. Deanne Algeo had a solo shot; Cara Stecker belted a 2-run homer for Intensity scored six runs in the 1st and which had a 6-2 lead in the top of the 2nd. Elizabeth Jones homered for the Stars first run, and hit sa bases-loaded single for the final run. Megan Sutphin, who pitched, drove in Holly Norris with the other Stars run.
Team NJ 7, Houston Power 2. Lauren Gibson led off the game with a line drive home run, and Katherine VanBenschoten upped the TNJ margin to 2-0 with a solo shot in the 2nd. Stephanie Speierman (Michigan) pitched for TNJ. Kristen Martinez (2010) hurled for the Power.
Texas Storm DeMarini 5, NJ Inferno 1. Inferno had used Olivia Galati in the first game and its other top pitcher had a sprained ankle. This was not the best of times for their other pitchers. In the 1st, Audra Wood led off with a walk; Leslie LeJune walked; Holly Holl walked and Lauren Sanford walked. Andrea Huelsenbeck was relieved by Jen Ortega. Jennifer Bergeron walked; and Molly Reynolds walked. When this parade stopped, Storm was ahead 4-0 and still had the bases loaded when the inning ended on a groundout.
GC Hurricanes 7, Wichita Mustangs 3. Game was tied 3-all in the top of the 6th. After the Mustangs scored a trio off Kara Clauss. Lindsay Dunlap (Misssissippi State) relieved. The Hurricanes, whose initial 1-0 lead came on a HR by Ashley Razey in the 1st, blew the game open in the bottom of the 6th. Facing Mustang pitcher Katie Armagost (09), Natalie Ojeda reached on an error; a single and a walk loaded the bases; Brooke Asher drove in 2 runs; another run scored on Samantha Soltis’s rbi groundout; and the final run scored on a single by Mary Kate Smith (Stanford).
Team NJ 6, RI Thunder 3. Kaley Coonce and Rachel Gillen split pitching chores. Tennessee-bound Lauren Gibson jacked a 2-run home run, her fourth of the tournament.
Storm DeMarini 1, Shamrocks 0. Nikki Mack decided this game with a solo shot in the 2nd inning, and almost smoked another HR with a shot which Erin Leddy caught as it was going over the fence in the 4th. Katie Vogt (09) had a good game for Storm, yielding a single to Reagan Doltron in the 2nd, singles to Kelsey Green and Marcy Bowdren in the 3rd, and a double to Briana Hanafin in the 4th, sandwiched in between ground outs and fly outs by a strong Storm defense. Lauren Vinson and Caitlyn de la Haba split the Shamrock pitching. Time was called with the Storm loading the bases.
RI Thunder 2, IN Magic 1. Nellie Coquillard singled and scored on Taylor Rager’s double for the Magic’s run. Thunder’s Emily Wilcox doubled and scored on a wild pitch. Andrea Smith scored the winning run; with the bases loaded, Jayme Mask grounded to short but the throw home eluded the Magic catcher.
GC Hurricanes 7, Shamrocks 1. Both of these perennial Gold contenders were testing large rosters, but this game got away quickly from the Virginians. In the 1st, with Kara Clauss and Ashley Razey on board, Cara Vitale launched a 3-run rocket. Score might have been higher but for a Shamrock double play. GCH pitched lefty Lindsay Dunlap to start, but Brittany Bowles and Clauss also took turns in the circle. The Shamrocks started with Brittany Black (09). Razey singled and scored on a sac fly, and Lauren Hall walked and scored on Mary Kate Smith’s rbi for a 5-0 lead. The Shamrocks scored their run off Clauss; Kristyn Sandberg singled and scored on a single by Haley Johnson.
Wagner’s 0, Pride 0 (8). This game ended Saturday action, under the lights. The game was scoreless at the end of regulation and the umpire, the coaches and the tournament director agreed to play an ITB inning. Wagner’s advanced their runner from 2nd with a single but could go no further. Pride’s best chance ended when their ITB runner was nailed trying to steal 3rd. Pride got yeoman work for eight innings from pitcher Melissa Rand. Wagner’s started Ashley Williams; Alexandra Schmidt relieved to start the 5th.
Sidebar: Catherine Osterman was there recruiting for DePaul. We admire her patience, trying to watch games while besieged by youngsters (and a few adults) seeking her autograph on balls, caps, programs, etc.
We also tip the Spyglass to NJ Intensity, Wagner’s and Blazing Angels who set up food stands. These are not you basic ballpark hotdogs – coaches and umpires had their choices of Philly cheesesteaks, Maryland crab soup and shrimp, steak on a stick, chili, potato and macaroni salad; beans; sausage and peppers. Plus desserts, soft drinks, etc. A lot of work by moms and dads went into these buffets and we thank them.
