Game Notes

Houston Power 2, GC Hurricanes 1.  Emily Casey and Rachelle Harris had rbi hits.  Kaitlin Wolf and Joanna Krienitz pitched for Houston, Brittany Bowles and Kara Clauss for the Hurricanes.

Shamrocks 8, Wichita Mustangs 0.  Melanie Mitchell (09) won.  Devon Metcalf (Drexel) hit two solo HRs.  Karla Powell (Wisconsin) and Diondra Fryer (Tennessee) also went yard.

Houston Power 2, NC Lady Blues 2.  Power had a 2-0 lead behind pitcher Kristen Martinez.  Taran Tyler homered for Power in the 3rd.

TX Storm DeMarini 4, WA Ladyhawks 2.  The Ladyhawks led 2-0 in the 3rd.  Lauren Sanford broke a 2-2 tie with a solo HR.  Cami Newsome pitched for Storm.  Kelsie Vallies hurled for the Ladyhawks.

NJ Inferno 3, VA Legends 3.  Inferno built a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st for Olivia Galati, but the Legends rebounded.  Pitcher Jennifer Gniadek (FIU) slugged a home run.  Legends worked a tie when catcher Brittany Wilkins (08) drove in two runs.

San Diego Renegades 6, GC Hurricanes 1.  The Floridians won all their games on Saturday but this was their second loss on Sunday.  Tory Ferreria continues to impress as one of the better unsigned 08 pitchers.  As expected for their last game, the Hurricanes used virtually all of their mound corps, starting with Lindsay Dunlap, the lefty going to Mississippi State, followed in the 3rd by Kara Claus (08), and finishing with ace Brittany Bowles (Georgia).  The Renegades broke out when 09 superstar Alix Johnson singled; closely-watched shortstop Kellie Fox singled.  Maggie Doremus (Oregon State) laid down a sacrifice; Johnson scored on the error.  With two out, Sammi Gallardo (2010) hit an rbi single; Vanessa Currie (09) and Isela Mohr (08) followed with rbi singles.  In the top of the 6th, Amanda Carpenter (09) jacked a 2-run homer with Gallardo on base with a single.  Brooke Asher drove in the Hurricane run in the 4th.

NJ Breakers 4, Ill Chill 0.  The Breakers were up 1-0 behind Valerie Cassell (2012) when Niki Cognigni hit a 3-run, bases-loaded double.

Team NJ 3, Wichita Mustangs 1.  Courtney Liddle (09) broke a 1-1 tie with a 2-run walk-off home run.  Brittany O’Donnell (Notre Dame) pitched for TNJ; Sara Wedel (08) for the Mustangs.  Maddison Resley scored for Wichita when Stephanie Drake reached on an error at 1st.  Could have been a big inning for the Mustangs; O’Donnell walked the first three batters; a 2-6 and two Ks ended the threat (O’Donnell finished with nine, striking out the side in the final inning). Elsie Fortier (2010) drove in the first run for TNJ, scoring Kacey Coonce who had singled.  A double play by Wichita had halted a 1st inning TNJ threat.

Shamrocks 2, Houston Power 1.  Game was halted by the drop-dead time limit just after Houston had scored twice to take a 3-2 lead; the final score reverting back to the last full inning.  Caitlyn de la Haba (Villanova) took the mound for the Shamrocks, Joanna Krienitz for Power. Colleen Carty and Kaitlyn Sileo drove in the Shamrock runs.  In their final at bat before time expired, the visiting Power started their rally with a single by Emily Casey, followed by a single to center.  Kristy Smith beat out an infield dribbler to load the bases.  Ashley Isbell singled in a run and Rachelle Harris drew a bases-loaded walk for a 3-2 lead just before the umpire called time.

Witches 6, Legends 3.  The score was 4-3 Witches when SPY left to watch another game.  The Witches had led 4-0, spurred by a 3-run homer off the bat of 2010 Tori Pettine.  Ashley Cornell’s grounder brought home the third Legends run.

Blazing Angels 4, Wagners 0.   We were impressed with the overall play of right fielder Jena Phillips whose diving catch stopped a possible Wagners rally.  The Angels reached the final score on rbi double by D J Slugh (09) and Lauren Davis (08). Karen Strychowski pitched for the Angels; Ashleigh Williams for Wagners.

PA Gems 6, NJ Intensity 3.  Pennsbury took control of this game early with a grand slam by Shanna Brown (09).  Brown later drove in Amanda Bachmann with a run to increase the score to 5-1.  Could have been worse; Intensity fought off a bases-loaded situation, nailing two runners at home.  Intensity had rbi hits by Melanie Morrison and Meliisa Schwartz in the 4th.  A solo shot by Kirby Groves made the Gems lead 6-3 in the 5th

Sidebar:  Team strengths in the Northeast will change at the end of fall ball when the TNJ stars return to their travel ball teams.  Lauren Gibson, who had four home runs, goes back to her father’s team, Wagners, as does infield standout Kourtney Salvarola.  Brittany O’Donnell returns to play for her dad’s team, NJ Intensity.  Courtney Liddle will resume her catching for the Shamrocks; Hailey Smith also returns to the Shamrocks.  Stephanie Speierman (Michigan) plays for the MD Stars.  Katherine VanBenschoten goes back to the WJ Witches.  Kaley Coonce rejoins IL Southern Force where her sister won Gold nationals.  Rachel Gillen rejoins Delaware Magic.  Cyndil Matthew plays for NJ Rocks, while Caitlin Schultze plays for NE Patriots, Elise Fortier plays for NE Phoenix, and Tammy Wray rejoins Hudson Valley Express.  Wagners, Intensity, Witches and Shamrocks would have benefited by having these players this past weekend.  TNJ will take them to Surf City, Rising Stars, and Batbuster tournaments.
