An estimated 97 college coaches attended the 35 games for the Thursday session of the annual Team New Jersey exposure tournament, a number worth noting because the majority of college coaches usually attend Friday and Saturday.

Also worth noting: this was the first experience for most teams pitching from 43 feet.

GAME NOTES

Hurricanes 3, Corona Angels 3.  Marty Tyson divided his Angels squad, one griup competing for a Gold berth this coming weekend in Sacramento, the other group, mostly unsigned players needing exposure, coming to TNJ.  The Angels held a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th, with time expiring.  Starting pitcher Rebecca Arbino loaded the bases on walks, with one out.  Ace Victoria Tyson relieved.  The second out was gained ona fielder’s choice, forcing the runner at home.  Jessica Mouse singled to left, rbi.  The tying run scored on a groundout by Amy Buckovich.  Brittany Bowles pitched for GCH.

NJ Inferno 7, Corona Angels 5.  The Angels scored in top 2nd on a solo HR by Kelley Wedell.  The lead ballooned to 4-0 with three runs in the 3rd, scored by Danielle Yudin, #3, and Nikki Williams.  The Inferno took charge with 7 runs in the bottom of the 3rd.  With two on, Laura Jaxheimer doubled.  Jillian Ortega hit an rbi single.  Newcomer Pellachio tripledin 2 runs.  With 2 out, Cassie Reilly-Bocca hit an rbi single.  Amy DeLuca walked.  Vicki Kavitsky tripled in the final runs.  The Angels added a run in the 4th, but could not mount a sustained threat.  Alyssa Maiese pitched the win over Victoria Tyson.

NJ Inferno 7, Georgia Elite 1.  Three home runs by the Inferno: two by Jessica Nicola, one by Pellachio.

Lionettes 1, GA Elite 0.  Katie Terrazas provided the run with a solo HR.

Hotshots 6, Georgia Elite 2.  Arizona, benefiting from a strong effort by Nicole Ayres, scored 6 runs in the 4th.  Katelyn Boyd and Gabriella Parra had 2 rbi each.  We were impressed with the base-running skills of the Elite’s Adele Voigt and the burner speed of freshman Morgan Bullock in right field.  Meredith Linch took the loss.  The Hotshots are hurting in their mound corps.  Marissa Drewery suffered a foot injury and could be lost for the season.  Katie Cotta is trying to regain the significant weight lost during her JC season and to get back to her dominant Gold form of 2005.

Batbusters GH 2, Hurricanes 0.  The Hurricanes put a handful of runners aboard but couldn’t break Donna Kerr and a stout Batbuster defense.  Aja Paculba provided the offense with a 2-run HR in the 1st off Jessica Lupardus.

Batbusters 5, NJ Pride 0.  Michelle Tolfa bested Jaci Rahi.

Shamrocks 9, Maddogs 0.  The defending national champions supported pitcher Kelly Engman with the first of three long-ball assaults on Thursday.  Dorian Shaw belted a solo for an early lead, later adding another solo.  Sam Ingersoll went yard.  The crowning blow was a grand slam by Kelly Haller.

Hurricanes 2, Magic 0.  Stephanie Brombacher, the heavily recruited GCH ace, made her first appearance since removing the cast from her hand (snuff box injury) and twirled a 3-hitter.  She also contributed to the game-ending suspense.  Tiffany DeFelice scored in the 1st; Amy Buckovich in the 2nd; and Lauren Kramer in the 4th.  With time expiring in top 7th, Brombacher gave up a hit, a walk, and hit Alyssa Garza to load the bases.  But, the game ended on a 4-3 groundout.   Melanie Kiser was the losing pitcher.

Shamrocks 7, Eclipse 0.  Megan Elliott pitched 5 strong innings; Kerry Hickey relieved in the 6th.  The Shamrocks scored 5 runs in the 3rd.  Hickey homered.  Dorian Shaw hit a grand slam.

NJ Pride 0, Vienna Stars 0.  Good matchup between Pride’s Amanda Stacevicz and the Stars Malenie Williams, a prep star in Maryland.  The Pride verged on taking the game in the bottom of the 7th when Stacevich tripled but Williams struck out the next three batters.

Arizona Hotshots 2, Texas Eclipse 2.  SPY did not see all the scoring, but we watched Kattie Cotta pitch 2 innings.  Admittedly very under weight after a sterenuous JC season, in which she topped the charts for California JC pitchers,  Katie didn’t have last year’s velocity but her curve was sharp.  We are confident of her comeback.

Shamrocks 9, Texas Storm 0.  Well-supported outing for Brit Gardner.  The Shamrocks led 5-0 in the 4th.  Kelly Haller belted a 3-run homer.
