OLYMPIC SIDEBAR
So close – and yet so far. Lindsey Vonn won the downhill portion of the super combined today, as was expected given her dominant run yesterday winning Gold in the downhill. But, she caught the tip of a ski as she neared the bottom of the slalom course, crashing through a gate and did not finish. Her best friend, Maria Riesch, won the Gold while Julia Mancuso won her second Silver for the USA in as many days.
A champion on and off the ice. Snowboarder Hannah Teeter was overtaken on the second run by Australia’s champion Torah Bright and the Americans won Silver and Bronze (Kelly Clark). Teeter and Clark had won Gold medals in previous Olympics. But Teeter gets high marks from the sports community for her charity work, notably in Darfur, and has now turned her attention to Haiti. Before the competition on the half-pipe, Teeter pledged to give her earnings to Haitian relief. Gold medalists receive $25,000, silver and bronze less. And, yes, she looked like a champion in that Sports Illustrated bikini.
Not quite the same
Houston’s Mayor Anise Parker says she played softball at Rice University (most recently in an article from the Houston Chronicle Section B2, Feb 17, 2010). But, Texas readers tell SPY Rice never had a Varsity Softball program and a quick check of Rice’s web site shows that they only offer softball as an intramural sport.

Youth Softball Teams Needed for LSU Pregame Ceremonies
BATON ROUGE – The LSU softball team is inviting area youth softball programs ages 12-and-under to Tiger Park to join the players on the field in both non-conference and Southeastern Conference games this season during the national anthem after tournament play. (GOOD IDEA)
For participating, each team member receives an autographed softball from the 2010 Tigers. LSU opens SEC action by welcoming Ole Miss on March 17 to Tiger Park for a mid-week doubleheader.
